Elections are the main responsibility of the government: Prime Minister Karki

What you should know

Prime Minister Sushila Karki has said that her government's primary responsibility is to transfer power to a peaceful and democratically elected government through the upcoming elections.

Karki, the head of the government formed after the Gen-G movement on 23 and 24 Bhadra, briefed foreign diplomats in Kathmandu for the first time on Friday and said that it is her government's responsibility to hold free and fair general elections. She, who also holds the responsibility of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, informed the diplomats that the government is busy preparing for the elections.

The election to the House of Representatives is scheduled for 21 Falgun. She said that the government's entire attention and resources are focused on the elections. She discussed the political change that has taken place due to the strength of the Gen-G generation. She said that the Gen-G movement reflects the aspirations of good governance, economic opportunity and integrity. She said that the government is trying to improve corruption and misgovernance, earn the trust of the people, strengthen institutions and provide better public services by making governance more transparent. 'The movement was driven by the demand for transparency and accountability. The movement surprised many, she said, “I was called to lead at an uncertain time. It was not a position I sought. But it is a responsibility I accepted with a deep sense of duty to my country.” She said the only non-negotiable mandate of her non-political transitional government is to hold the House of Representatives elections on March 5, 2026.

She said multi-party democracy is the cornerstone of Nepal’s political system. She mentioned that the government is committed to security, legal framework and arrangements for credible elections. She said that the Election Commission will be strengthened, security will be improved and dialogue will be held with all political parties, including Gen-G representatives.

She informed that the government is also exploring the possibility of an external voting system to gradually realize the principle of universal suffrage for Nepali citizens temporarily residing abroad. She also said that the situation in Nepal is gradually returning to normal.
