With the onset of monsoon across the country, the traffic police has started asking all motorists to take extreme caution with microphones saying that the risk of road accidents has increased due to rain.
As there is a possibility of heavy rain for the next three days, special precautions are required, the traffic police has taken high vigilance in road safety and miking is being done at various checkpoints .
Kathmandu Valley Traffic Police Chief and Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Navraj Adhikari said that since the roads become slippery during the rainy season, the visibility is low and the risk of landslides and floods is high, drivers have been asked to take special precautions.
He said, 'According to the recent weather forecast, it is seen that the monsoon will be active for three days, so there is a risk in driving during this time. That is why we have started miking at major crossings and busy places in the valley to make drivers aware.'
The chief traffic police officer informed that since last night, the traffic police have been deployed in places like Nagadhunga, Sanga, Thankot, Balaju, Satdobato and other places that exit from the valley, and they have started giving verbal information and miking to the drivers .
Long-distance vehicle drivers leaving Nagadhunga have been micked with a request not to travel alone at night and when it is raining, to travel in groups as much as possible and also to conduct technical tests (brake, tire, light etc.) of the vehicle on a regular basis . He said, 'Especially hilly and landslide-prone roads, including Prithvi Highway, Siddharth Highway, BP Highway, Arani Highway, etc., the risk is even higher there. Therefore, it is necessary to be more cautious when going to such areas.'
During the rainy season, due to landslides, road erosion and water falling on the road, there is a high possibility of blocking the road, vehicle damage or accidents.
It is said that the traffic police are currently conducting regular patrols on the main roads and highways across the country, exchanging information through traffic posts, and keeping the traffic team in readiness for immediate information delivery and rescue operations in the event of a disaster.
Traffic Police has been publishing information on weather updates, road conditions, and emergency road closures through social networks, such as Facebook, Twitter (X) and the departmental website, so that timely information reaches road users.
Valley Traffic Police Spokesperson and Superintendent of Police Nareshraj Subedi said that the risk of accidents will naturally increase due to the increasing traffic pressure, unfavorable weather, and weak physical infrastructure on the roads across the country.
He said, the need to ensure safe travel by putting into practice the slogan 'Be careful, avoid accidents' has been felt more strongly these days. Accordingly, the traffic police are actively deployed on the road.'
