The government has amended the Voter's Roll Act to make it possible to register voters' names for the House of Representatives elections announced on February 21. The way was opened after the government amended the voter list act so that time can be given for registration of names in the voter list through an ordinance.
According to the provisions of
act, the collection of voter list was stopped from the day the election date was announced. In Section 4 of the Act, it is mentioned that after the date of election is announced, names shall not be registered in the electoral roll for the purpose of that election. Due to the same arrangement, the collection of voter list was stopped after the election was announced on 27 August. A large number of the 'Gen-G' generation would have been disenfranchised due to the provision in the
act. On the night of 27 August, the government was formed under the leadership of former Chief Justice Sushila Karki on the strength of Gen-G movement, and on the same night, the House of Representatives was dissolved and new elections were announced on 21 February. In two weeks after the formation of
, the government brought the first ordinance. On the recommendation of the government, President Ramchandra Paudel on Thursday issued an ordinance to amend the Voters' Roll Act, 2073. Acting Chief Election Commissioner Ram Prasad Bhandari said that the act has been amended to give an opportunity to those who have missed to write their names in the electoral roll.
Before the end of the term of the House of Representatives or in the case of dissolution of the Provincial Assembly, after the date of the election has been announced, provision has been made through an ordinance that there will be no hindrance in the registration of voter names until the date specified by the Commission for the purposes of that election. The right to set the deadline has been given to the commission itself.
'We are in discussion. We will take a decision on Thursday about how much time can be given without affecting the election program," said Kawa Chief Commissioner Bhandari to Kantipu. Those who have reached the age of 18 years or who missed the registration even before reaching the age of 18 during the extended period will also have the opportunity to register.
In the ordinance brought by the government, there is no mention of voting opportunities for Nepali citizens abroad. After receiving the appointment, Home Minister Omprakash Aryal had said that Nepali expatriates will also be given the right to vote in this election. However, the ordinance does not contain anything in that regard. Minister Aryal said that the government will give a chance to those who are eligible to register their names in the voter list and those who are missing. And, for that, he also claimed to start the process of giving voting rights to Nepalis abroad.
2081 The number of people who have registered their names in the voter list is 181 lakh 48 thousand 654. There are 89 lakh 10 thousand 896 female voters, 92 lakh 37 thousand 572 male voters and 186 other voters.
