Gen-G Rebellion: Australian Nepalis are optimistic

Nepali people in Australia are equally interested in the Jen-G rebellion that happened almost two weeks ago and the developments that have developed since then. They are not only receiving information about what is happening in Nepal every day, they are also forming many opinions about it.

The Nepalis in Australia are mainly interested in how Nepal's politics will develop after the Jen-G rebellion and how the issues raised in the rebellion will proceed.

Kantipur has gathered some representative Nepalis in Australia about their views on Gen-G Rebellion and the subsequent situation.

Nepal should be made by Nepalese hands

Sita Thapa: Professor, University of South Australia

The Gen-G rebellion has proved wrong the idea that the new generation lacks political awareness and has no interest in politics. It is a positive thing that they are aware and come to the streets. But the way the public property of the country was damaged under the guise of the movement is a very sad thing. It is even more tragic that young children lost their lives in the movement. Even after the contribution of so many people, the country is now in a state of confusion. The Nepalese who are in migration are now confused as to which way the country will go. It is necessary for all Nepalis to be aware and alert to say that Nepal should be made by Nepalis and there should be no foreign interference. Don't forget the contribution made by Jen-ji and we should end the current confusion.

'Zero tolerance' against corruption

Chiranjeevi Devkota: Former president, Australian Nepalese Journalists Association (ANJA)

Jen-G's contribution to the anti-corruption and good governance movement needs to be addressed. Children need to sacrifice their lives to fulfill the vision of Nepal. If the future situation is limited to the change of power, the exit of some leaders, the coming to power of some, it will have a negative impact on the Nepali society for a long period of time. This will further increase the feeling of anger in Nepali people. Now there is a need for young people who are politically aware to come to political parties.  Gen-G, who is involved in the

movement, and the youth who are in the current party and have been cornered, but who can say good is good and are in favor of good governance, should work together to build a new Nepal with the campaign of 'Zero Tolerance' against corruption. If that can't be done, I don't think that this contribution made by Jen-ji and the purpose of the movement can be fulfilled.

This revolt is the result of deep distrust of the leaders

Ethan Shakya: Vice President, Public Relations Committee Australia

The main reason for the Gen-G movement is that leaders use state resources for personal gain, increased impunity and inaction, lack of equal opportunities. To be honest, this movement was not only a movement seen in the streets, but also a failure of the political structure, a deep distrust towards the leaders. This movement is a strong message that the old style of power management has been rejected and the new generation demands responsible leadership.

Now there should be strict measures against corruption, including investigation of the assets of anyone holding a public position after 2046, and strict action should be taken against leaders or employees who are found guilty. All illegal assets should be confiscated and kept in the state treasury, and whoever is found guilty during the agitation should be brought to justice regardless of whether they are leaders, activists or protestors. The perpetrators of vandalism and arson in the historical property and government buildings during the movement should be identified and action taken immediately.

Youth should be prioritized in the decision-making process

Prerna Dhungana: Student

Nepal's Gen-G movement was not just about going to the streets and protesting, it was about ending the corruption and injustice that has existed for years. Corrupt leaders are looting the country and Napo babies have been getting privileges by birth. Our movement is not only to change the chair but to select leadership on the basis of honesty, ability and transparency. This movement is actually not only for Gen-G but for the entire Nepalese society. Our demand after the movement is over is reform, but it should not be limited to the leaders.

Big businesses, media, influential groups, all those who have helped to spread corruption, should be held accountable. Youth should be prioritized in the decision-making process. There should be a fair investigation into all the shootings of innocent people. Not only that, the corrupt assets accumulated in the last three decades should be searched and recovered. Transparent and fair elections and Nepalis living abroad should also be able to exercise their right to vote online.
