In Birgunj, where cholera has been spreading for a month, the infection is on the rise again. Since the last three/four days, the number of patients with diarrhea and cholera has started increasing again in the hospital here.
According to the data released by the office of Birganj Metropolitan Municipality at 5:30 pm on Saturday, the number of cholera infected people in Mahanagar alone has reached 219. On the other hand, the number of cholera infected has reached 18 with the addition of 1 infected person in Pokharia Hospital. The total number of cholera infected in the district has reached 237, including Birganj and Pokhriyam. In 24 hours, 27 new patients of diarrhea and cholera have been added in Birganj and Pokharia.
So far, 1,451 patients with diarrhea and cholera have been admitted to Birganj Mahanagar and Pokhria hospitals, and 1,421 have been discharged and returned home. 30 are still undergoing treatment in various hospitals. Among them, 2 are admitted in ICU, one HDU and 27 in general ward. Among the cholera infected, 2 are being treated at Prabhu Hospital in Birganj, 1 at Tarai Hospital and Pokhria Hospital.
Cholera infection has increased again in Birgunj metropolitan area for the past three/four days. Spokesman of Narayani Hospital Dr. Udayanarayan Singh says. He said that only on Friday, six patients with diarrhea came to Narayani Hospital and three of them were confirmed to have cholera infection. He said that 20 to 22 people with diarrhea and cholera come to the hospital every day.
He also said that the cholera infection started in wards 12 and 11 of the metropolis and diarrhea patients started coming to the hospital repeatedly. "Those who have recovered once have started coming back with diarrhoea," he said, "it seems that the problem lies in the water they consume." "Normally, the cholera germ survives in water for five days," he said, "When it started raining, the water level of the drains increased and the germs in the three got mixed with the water in the water pipes in the drains and reached the houses." During a period of one month, the cholera infection sometimes increases rapidly, sometimes decreases and sometimes remains at a stable point . Currently, the infection is on the rise again since three/four days. In the tests conducted by different organizations in Birganj, Janakpur and Kathmandu by collecting water samples in separate laboratories, no cholera germs were found in the water .
Cholera infection has not decreased in Birganj metropolitan area even after long efforts. Rather, it is increasing. Jaimod Thakur, spokesperson and officer of the district health office, says that cholera infection will not be controlled easily unless the locals themselves are aware and vigilant.
"Despite emphasis on the awareness program, awareness has not increased among the locals, many locals are still consuming drinking water without purifying it," he said. Thakur says that the best way to prevent it is to boil water and eat it with everyone taking precautions.
