Home Minister Ramesh Akhtar has said that the source of the outbreak of diarrhea in Birganj has not yet been ascertained. In a press conference organized by Press Union Parsa in Birganj on Monday, he claimed that the source of cholera will be found even if a team of experts is called.

The Home Minister has to answer about the source of cholera that has been spreading in Birganj since a week and a half ago. Despite long efforts by governmental and non-governmental mechanisms, the actual source of cholera in Birgunj is still not known.

As expected at the beginning, according to the results of various laboratories, no cholera bacteria were found in the water of Birganj Mahanagar's drinking water institute and deep boring. In such a state of confusion, the general public has also become confused and suspicious.

Even though everyone concerned has been stressing on the purity of water since the awareness campaign to prevent cholera and diarrhea, the incidence of cholera infection in Birganj metropolis and Pokharia municipality is increasing daily.

According to the new data released by Birgunj Metropolitan Corporation at 9:30 am on Monday, the number of cholera infected in Birgunj area alone has reached 173. Among those who came in contact with Pokhria Hospital, the number of cholera infected has reached 15. The number of infected people in the district has reached 190 including Virgunj and Pokhria.

According to the latest data of Birganj Metropolitan Municipality Health Department, till Monday morning, a total of 858 diarrhea and cholera patients have come in contact with various hospitals in Birganj. 46 of them are new patients.

Out of 858, 751 have returned home after treatment. 41 cholera infected are still under treatment. Currently, 107 diarrhea patients are being treated in different hospitals in Birganj. Out of them 87 are admitted in general ward, 3 in HDU and 17 in ICU.

Out of a total of 31 diarrhea and cholera patients admitted for treatment in Pokharia Hospital till Sunday evening, 17 people have been confirmed to have cholera infection, according to Dr. Anand Rauniyar, the hospital's chief. From Saturday to Sunday, 3 more new patients have come for treatment. All of them are infected with cholera. On Saturday, half a dozen patients were discharged after treatment and returned home.

Even though the rate of admission of new patients and the rate of returning home after treatment are similar, the non-stop trend of new patients is becoming a matter of concern. Birganj Metropolitan Municipality has closed all educational institutions here for a week to prevent the spread of the disaster.
