The US has assisted in the grant of DNA testing equipment, which is considered important in criminal investigations. American Ambassador to Nepal Dean R. Thompson handed over DNA testing equipment to Inspector General of Police Deepak Thapa on Wednesday.
DNA technology is considered reliable and trustworthy for scientific investigation of crime and collection of biological facts/evidence. Due to the lack of such equipment, some complex investigations of the police are forced to rely on human and rhetorical evidence.
Last time, with the help of the Korean government, the police developed the structure of the Cyber Bureau. The structure of the bureau with equipment and trained manpower is ready to be moved from Votahiti to Samakhusi to make the technology-based research effective. In Samakhushi, the bureau's modern building structure has been built with the support of the Korean government. .
The DNA equipment was handed over to Inspector General Thapa by American Ambassador Thompson on Wednesday. The Central Forensic Science Laboratory of Police is in operation in Samakhushi.
According to the police headquarters, the United States has supported equipment including the 'Combine DNA Index System' (CODIS), DNA software, Radian Atmospheric Pressure Solids Analysis Probe (RAPSNP), mass spectrometer and drug detection instruments.
The police headquarters said that the equipment received will help to make crime investigation scientific and evidence-based. DNA stores biological information. Due to the lack of DNA related equipment, the police have taken it to various countries including India for testing in some crime cases.
