The government has decided to give social networks including Facebook time to be listed within seven days. The cabinet meeting held on Monday decided to make social networks accountable according to the directive 2080 that regulates the use of social media and the order of the Supreme Court.

Social networks have been called upon to be listed in the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology within seven days.

The government has also decided not to allow social networks that have not been listed or contacted the ministry to be used within Nepal. As mentioned in the

notification, such ban will end as soon as it is registered . The government has also decided to give instructions to the Nepal Telecommunication Authority for this.

Publicizing the Cabinet's decision, Government Spokesperson and Minister of Communication and Information Technology Prithvi Subba Gurung on Wednesday said that regulation is necessary to control the increasing cybercrime, hate speech, false information, identity theft, sextortion, deepfake and activities that harm social harmony through social media. According to him, for this purpose, the ministry has already submitted a bill on social media to the parliament, and according to the 2080 guidelines, all domestic and foreign platforms operating in Nepal must be registered and a contact person must be appointed.

Minister Gurung said that even though the ministry issued notices four times, most of the companies did not come to register. . 'Representatives with the secretary of our ministry had a virtual dialogue with Meta's representative, they did not care,'  He said,  "Tiktak is registered in Nepal and is working on promotion of tourism and education, I told META to also register in health and agriculture, they said yes but then they disappeared.

Minister Gurung made it clear that the country is bigger than the business organization and everyone must obey the local constitution and laws. He has warned that action will be taken against the organizations that fail. Stating that the Supreme Court has also ordered the government to register all social networks, appoint a contact person and close the business of those who refuse, he said that action will be taken against organizations that do not register within seven days as per the decision of the cabinet.
