Former Prime Minister and Chairman of Nepal Samajwadi Party (Nyan Shakti) Baburam Bhattarai has expressed his support for the agitation of sugarcane farmers. Reaching Maitighar Mandal in Kathmandu on Tuesday, he expressed his support saying that the demands of sugarcane farmers are justified.

Bhattarai criticized the government saying that the government has cut the subsidy given to the sugarcane farmers by a single decision.

'After a long period of agitation, there was talk of giving subsidies to farmers at the rate of 70 rupees per quintal. That is also due to the great movement of the farmers . It will be reduced to 35 rupees and that too will not be given on time. And the government can do it alone ? Wasn't this bullying and cheating on the farmers? Bhattarai said.

Sugarcane farmers all over the country, including Madhesh province, have been protesting to maintain the subsidy of Rs 70 per quintal set by the government and to pay the arrears. They are protesting demanding payment of sugarcane for the financial year 2081/82.
