120 snow leopards have been found in Chefoksundo National Park and surrounding forest areas. The park took almost 5 months to count 90 snow leopards within the park and 30 snow leopards in the surrounding national forest.
In the protected area of the park, the density of snow leopards per hundred square kilometers is 2.2. Cameras were installed at 66 locations in the forest area for snow leopard counting. Nurendra Aryal, chief conservation officer of Chefoksundo National Park, said that the snow leopard, a rare wild animal in the world, is found only in 12 countries in Asia. He said that the number of snow leopards has also increased due to the increase in the number of essential food species Jharal, Ghoral and Naur. ``The increase in the number of snow leopards has helped tourism,'' he said, ``The density of snow leopards in the park is the highest in Nepal.'' According to him, the snow leopard likes to live in the forests where it is dark. But he said that there is a problem to protect the snow leopard's habitat as the locals start using the snow for domestic purposes. ``Nigalo is disappearing,'' he said. "Now, the mountains and patans here have started to become bare in winter, due to which their habitat has come into crisis," he said, "Now it is necessary to announce various packages to increase the attraction of tourists in the park." Established in 2040, the park covers an area of 3,555 square kilometers. 3 municipalities of Dolpa including Mugumkarmarong rural municipality of Mugu are included in the park. According to the park, about 10,000 tourists visited the park this year.
