Forest and Environment Minister Ain Bahadur Shahi Thakuri has said that Nepal is experiencing the sad experience of climate change. He said this while addressing the Hindu Kush Himalayan Parliamentary Conference in Kathmandu on Monday. He said that recently in Rasuwa district many people lost their lives due to big floods and landslides and billions were lost.
He said that due to lack of rain for a long time in Terai, Madhes, there is a problem of drinking water and farmers are not able to plant paddy. He said that if the farmers could not plant their fields in time, there would be a problem in food security in the future. He said that women, children and poor communities are suffering the most from climate change.
He demanded to ensure equal and easy access to climate finance. He said, 'This year alone, Nepal had to experience the tragedy of climate change. Recently, many people lost their lives due to heavy floods and landslides in Rasuwa district. Billions of property have been damaged. In Terai, Madhes, due to lack of rain for a long time, there was a problem of drinking water and they could not plant the fields in time. If the farmers are not able to plant their fields in time, then there will be a problem in food security in the future. There has been a huge investment in the field of biodiversity in Nepal. About 46 percent of our land is covered by forests. It is being protected. Despite low carbon emissions, we have to suffer the deep impact of climate change.'
Minister Thakuri said that Nepal is the basis of water, food and energy security for nearly two billion citizens of the Hindu Kush Himalaya region. He said that there is a big problem due to climate change and loss of biological diversity.
