What you should know
It is a natural right to get citizenship after reaching the age of 16, but 72-year-old Lokikumari Budha of Bangad Kupinde Municipality-1 Basneura in Salyan has not yet been able to get citizenship.
Born in the womb of Ratu Budha and Newkali Budha in 2010, she was living with her elder sister Sivakali after her parents died at a young age. Despite being married for 16 years, she has been deprived of citizenship as she has been separated from her husband and family for three/four decades.
Loki, who was destitute after losing her relationship with her parents and her husband after marriage, was unsuccessful in her attempt to become a citizen. After falling down and injuring her back, she is physically disabled and has not even been able to take the initiative by reaching the relevant authorities.
Due to being deprived of citizenship, she is also deprived of the facilities she gets from the state. Although she was born in Basneura, now she is living in Amra. She is forced to go and work from house to house for two weeks due to her poor economic situation.
Dorna Kumar Yari, a resident of Amra, says that even though the identity of the parents has been revealed and they are married, there is no one to take care of them. Yiri says that he has to go to someone else's house to earn a living and because he does not have citizenship, he has to be deprived of social security and other benefits from the government.
"When I inquired with some locals living in Basneura, after losing her parents, Loki has been living with her sister Shivakali, after marriage she also lived with her husband for some time," he said, "The relationship with her husband and his family is not good and after she fell and suffered a severe back injury, when the family neglected her, she returned to her sister. It seems that she is lonely after her sister's marriage.' Yiri says that even if Loki only gets social security allowance after getting citizenship, she will be financially deprived.
Thum Bahadur, the ward chairman of Bangad Kupinde Municipality-1, says that they are looking for the relatives of BC Loki. He said that since sister Shivakumari was living in Sallibazar, preparations were being made to meet her and the search was also on to find out who she was married to. "We are working, if a responsible person is found, he will soon become a citizen," he said.
Chief District Officer of Salyan Netra Prasad Subedi said that he is ready to go home to meet Loki who has not yet received citizenship. He said that after meeting with Loki and his relatives, he will proceed with the process of providing citizenship as soon as possible.
