Home Minister Ramesh Akhtar has informed that a committee has been formed to investigate the incident that took place in Kailali Jail on 22nd July.
In the meeting of the Law, Justice and Human Rights Committee held at Singh Darbar on Wednesday, he said that the committee was formed under the leadership of the Assistant Chief District Officer. He also clarified that the committee will submit a report within the specified period and on the basis of that report, legal action will be taken against the culprits.
On the night of July 22, one prisoner was killed and 48 others were injured. Among them, three referred by the hospital have been brought to Kathmandu. Two people are being treated at the trauma center and one at the tertiary teaching hospital. Four people have been sent back to prison after treatment, while the remaining 41 people are currently being treated at Seti Provincial Hospital. The body of the deceased prisoner has been handed over to the family after completing the legal process.
There are currently 643 men and 47 women inmates in Kailali prison, male block 'A' and block 'B'. It is mentioned in the details that on the night of the incident, the prisoners broke the wall separating the two blocks and reached Block 'B' and beat up the prisoners there. After the
incident, 17 leaders of the groups involved in the conflict were transferred to other places, two special searches were conducted to find out the presence of illegal items in the prison and the Chief District Officer inspected the prison and reminded the prisoners to maintain peace and security.
According to him, the condition of the prison is now normal and adequate presence of security personnel has been ensured. The families of the prisoners were met and informed about their condition. The home minister also said that legal action will be taken against the culprits after receiving the report of the committee.
