How is abuse measured? Looking at body pain, injuries or complaints? Then how is the measurement of mental abuse? In recent days, some comments and emotional 'status' published through social networks have pointed out the need for debate on these issues.

And the question has also been raised that what schools and colleges are doing to students in the name of discipline, is it right? In order to maintain discipline, there has been a debate that the practices such as showing fear, punishing or putting mental pressure in colleges and schools are not traumatizing the students.

Last Wednesday, 'The Kathmandu Post' Kathmandu Model College (KMC) published news

. This matter was made public after students studying in this college and ex-students wrote on social media and reddit about the misbehavior experienced in the college. The post also interviewed 16 students and former students to learn more about the issue. Audio recordings of all these conversations are preserved with the post. and Instagram page, students and ex-students of the said college have shared many incidents of misbehavior that they have experienced. A student wrote on the ticker of the

post, "Two years ago when I was studying in class 12, I was beaten up because I didn't like the hairstyle." My hair style was not bad in college. But I was beaten. This kind of behavior should be stopped.'

Some said that such behavior is a part of discipline, and they have commented that the students of today are 'very sensitive'. One person wrote, 'During our time there was more beatings, it was more difficult.'

In most of the comments, students said that such abuses have become normal in most schools and colleges. Another student wrote on the ticker of the post, "Not only in KMC, most of the colleges in Kathmandu are competing to see how strict discipline can be implemented and students are forced to suffer misbehavior in the name of discipline." Some students have even mentioned the incidents of abuse against them by using the name of the college. 

What happened at KMC ?  Two weeks ago, a post titled 'Kathmandu Model College CI Staff Humiliate and Physically Assault Students'

was published on Reddit. Then the 20-year-old Kathmandu Model Secondary School (KMC Plus Two) at Baghbazar came into controversy . It was said in the said post - The Counseling Incharge (CI) of the college has been abusing the students regularly in the name of discipline . In more than 200 comments, posts and confessions on the

Reddit, it is mentioned that activities such as beating, verbal abuse, public humiliation and unnecessary physical examination have been done. Similarly, through a TikTok page called 'Truth', students of KMCM started to publicize their experiences under pseudonyms.

By July 30 alone, the page had more than 10,000 likes and hundreds of shares and similar experiences were shared in the posted videos and comments. Lately, in many educational institutions, the post of Discipline Incharge was called 'Discipline Incharge' (DI). But after the Kathmandu Metropolitan City banned the appointment of 'DI', Kathmandu Model College changed the name of the post to 'Counseling Incharge'.

Dhruv Kumar Kafle, co-spokesperson of Mahanagara, told Kantipur, "DI cannot be kept in schools and colleges." But it is wrong if they are implementing strict behavior by changing the name only.' 

A student studying in the 25th batch of Plus Two 'D-13 section' has written on reddit about an incident that happened two weeks ago in the college . According to him, about 12-13 students went to the toilet before the last class started. After returning, the computer teacher did not allow the class to enter and took everyone to the coordinator's office.

He wrote, "In the office, CI Renan Rizal asked if we had taken permission from the CR (Class Monitor) or the teacher." We didn't get permission . It's our fault . But for that we did not get such a big punishment . We are sure.' 

According to students  CI Rizal started beating everyone one by one . Another CI, Subba Sah, told the experience of a student who was standing silently by the side. Similarly another student said that the CI grabbed the collar of his shirt and beat him badly.  "We were treated like criminals", he said, "KMC may be academically excellent, but the behavior of the CIs here has spoiled the whole environment."

A student studying management in this college shared with us the experience of such abuse. On the condition of anonymity, he said, "My hair was short, I was also wearing oil." However, I was beaten on the basis that a small hair fell on my forehead. I follow all the rules of the college, but they intervene even on small pretexts.''

Kala, another student studying in the management and computer science group, also expressed concern about the behavior in the campus. We know that makeup cannot be brought to college. We also have a general understanding that you should not come to college wearing make-up as if you were going to a party . But KMC also bans basic things like sunscreen, vaseline, lip balm as make-up . Nowadays even dermatologists say that you should wear sunscreen, but the college bans even this simple thing.' 

According to him, these materials are taken away during regular 'random checks', and most of them are not even returned . Then the students are called to the office of the CI and are called names . According to the students who came in contact with the Kathmandu Post, female CIs check their bodies to see if they have brought make-up even when they go to the toilet. According to

art, such strict rules have led to the psychology of students sneaking goods and rebelling against the college . Even common things like lip balm for chapped lips had to be hidden inside the underwear. The college should also consider whether there are any problems with its rules', she asked, 'What does sunscreen or lip balm have to do with discipline or studies?'

In college, if the CIs don't like someone's hair, clothes, they make fun of the students by giving them the nickname of 'conductor' . A student expressed his pain and said, "We have come to study". But here the word is used to insult and insult people who work in a normal profession.' 

Bhavna, who studied in class 12, shared a similar experience with us . She said that she had a very tough time mentally when she was studying in class 11 . Due to the stressful domestic situation as her sister was suffering from cancer, she sometimes went to stay at a friend's house during those days. One day she did not board the college van and went straight to her friend's house. But she forgot to tell this news at home. 

After he did not come, his parents contacted the college . She said that after this incident, she was repeatedly scolded by the college . She said, "I clarified everything with the coordinator sir (Manoj Subedi). However, I was repeatedly thrown out of the class and sent to Manoj sir's office.' 

College Deputy CEO Ram Neupane and Anish Dhakal  He said that keeping the mental health of the students as a priority, they have hired a psychiatrist in the college. But Bhavna said that her feelings were not respected by the college administration.

She said, "I was taking anxiety medicine". But Manoj sir accused me of acting. Those who take more medicine than this are also reading . He insulted you by saying that you are acting.' She complained that the college repeatedly harassed her about family and personal matters. 

Ashma, a class 12 law student, also spoke about the abusive behavior she experienced in college. She said, 'CCTV monitoring of the college is so strict that the students who come to study are forced to suffer like criminals. CIs are always sitting watching CCTV . We have come to study . We are not criminals who should be kept in jail and monitored.' 

Just a month ago, CI called one of Ashma's friends for talking too much in class. But according to him, she had a normal conversation in the class . The CI did not listen to his parents and immediately called the college saying 'there is an emergency'. Ashma said, "Incidents like scolding and insulting in front of everyone happen everyday in college." Most of the students who came in contact with the

post said that there is no safe, confidential and effective mechanism to complain to the college administration. Although written complaints should be filed through the Class Representative (CR), those complaints are often ignored .

Students under the grip of systemic abuse

Palki, who recently completed class 12, narrated a different experience. It is his experience that the college has control over basic rights like toilets. Male CIs used to come to the door of the toilet and shout before the break. "He used to tell me to go to class quickly," he remembers.

At that time, Palki considered such things normal. But when she returned to college as a volunteer intern in June 2082, she saw clearly that this behavior was not an individual incident, but part of an institutional pattern. "It was not just the behavior of one or two people," she said, "it was institutional and systemic." CIs Renan and Subba then took him to the office, where he was slapped again. He was crying, but the CIs kept beating .' 

When Palki questioned the CIs that such behavior was wrong, their answer was even more surprising .  They had no regrets. "KMC is a big institution," they said, "Such students should be treated like this." Don't you know, this is how science students are taught. Some parents have even given us permission to beat us.

Mental torture inside the hostel

For Rouhani, who graduated from college in 2081, control was not limited to the classroom. It spread to the hostel. She said that there was a rule for the students to wake up at 5 in the morning and sleep by 10 at night, and told them that even when they were tired, they could not relax in the afternoon.

She said that the mobile phones will be kept with all the wardens and will be given only for 6 hours on Saturdays, "At other times, calls could only be made through the warden, that too in front of the warden, for a maximum of three minutes". There was no privacy.'  

She also said that there is a rule not to tell the parents about the hostel and if someone tells and the warden finds out, there is a custom of shouting and cursing. According to the students, even if they sit on the roof for some time to get warmed by the sun in the winter months, they look at them suspiciously. Many students also recounted the experience of being scolded even if clothes were dried on the roof and had to be put back immediately.

Rouhani remembered the old days and said, "When I sat on the roof to dry my hair in winter, the wardens used to shout - 'Who are you sitting to show?' To show which boy did that, which boy did you have sex with?'  The female students staying in KMC hostel were made to wear the same type of track suit provided by the college.

According to a student of science faculty studying in class 12, the body of female students was constantly objectified. Wearing 'half-sleeves' or clothing that shows skin was prohibited even on tracksuit washing days. "We were told that your clothes attract the attention of male teachers", she said.

Remembering the mental impact it had on her, she added, '15-16-year-old us,  How about 'cover up as long as you can, or the male teachers might get distracted'? What does that imply about male teachers? Such comments seemed to objectify us, as if the teachers were looking at them sexually . We are wrong. It seemed like we were dirty.' 

Manish, a former student of this college who completed his studies in 2079, narrated many unpleasant experiences of his time in the college. He narrated a reference during a vacation of about 10-12 days after completing class 11 and said, "One day I entered the college campus wearing half pants. But the coordinator saw it and came running and almost scolded him. He said that he stood outside the gate and sent him home that day.

In Manish's experience, more Madhesi students are treated unfairly in college. It is his experience that the punishment is harsh for them and the style of speaking is different. Once he had raised this issue in a public event. But he was quickly dismissed by a professor. "Our topper is from Terai, why should we discriminate?" he replied.

In his experience, students from weaker backgrounds or students with parents who could not speak well in front of teachers were harassed more and abused more. Apart from when he was studying in college, he used to see this when he went to get some documents and certificates.

'The discipline system here is very strict and there is zero tolerance . There is no sympathy, no understanding . "Students are seen as a problem, not a person," he said.

Mental impact on students

Mental health experts say that the culture of discipline based on fear and punishment that is common in educational institutions in Nepal has had a profound effect on the mental health of students.

Shraddha Gadtaula, the founder and psychotherapist of Manosparsha, an organization working in the field of psychiatry, said that it is a wrong practice to consider slapping, yelling, insulting in front of everyone, and calling people names in a hepe style, as normal or necessary.
