The National Human Rights Commission has requested the government to discuss with stakeholders while revising the law on polygamy. The commission issued a press release on Wednesday and drew the attention of the government to amend the law only after sufficient discussion.
In the press release issued by the spokesperson of the Commission, Tikaram Pokharel, it is said that the law related to polygamy is not only a crime but also a matter related to human rights. According to the commission, the law amendment encourages polygamy both directly and indirectly, and the far-reaching effects on the family and society should also be understood.
Commission has requested the government to study the legal system in other democratic countries as well as the international treaties related to the rights in favor of Nepal.
The commission has requested the government to have sufficient discussion with the stakeholders while amending the law that concerns the common citizens and also to consider the suggestions available from the commission when proposing the amendment.
