Bagmati Province Chief Minister Bahadur Singh Lama has announced his resignation from the post on Monday. Lama announced his resignation at a press conference in Hetaunda on Sunday.
Lama had prepared to submit his resignation to the provincial head on Sunday evening. But since the provincial head did not arrive from Kathmandu, he could not resign.
"I will resign on Monday," said Chief Minister Lama. He said that he is going to resign at the request of party chairman Sher Bahadur Deuba and the discussion within his party Congress, even though he will still be the Chief Minister in constitutional terms.
Chief Minister Lama claimed that he did not get the expected support from his friends, and actions such as irregular transfers of senior government officials did not work. He expressed his displeasure that while the government of other provinces formed in a two-party alliance remained the same, there was a change of government in Bagmati. Why did the government have to change? Why did the leader of the party elected for five years have to be changed immediately?, he said. He said that if
Chief Minister Lama's claim that he did not get the expected support from his friends, irregular transfer of senior government officials, etc. is established as a conspiracy and a universal tradition, the game of government change will start in other provinces as well, but it will not benefit anyone. "This has created a threat to the democratic republic itself," he said.
Lama was appointed Chief Minister on 8th July 2081. A no-confidence motion was filed against him a few days ago under the leadership of Congress Bagmati Province President Indra Bahadur Baniyan.
Lama stepped down as leader of the parliamentary party after being defeated in the polls. After Lama's resignation, a new government will be formed under the leadership of Baniyan, who was elected as the leader of the Congress Provincial Parliamentary Party in Bagmati.
Baniyan has an opportunity to become the sixth Chief Minister of Bagmati Province. He had earlier tried to become the Chief Minister even when the Congress, Maoist and United Socialists formed a joint government. At that time, due to various political alliances, Rajendra Pandey of the United Socialist Party became the Chief Minister.
On 13 January 2079, Banian contested the election of Congress Parliamentary Party leader against Chief Minister Bahadur Singh Lama. But he was defeated. At that time, he had the support of 16 MPs while 21 MPs voted in favor of Lama. This time, he was elected as the leader of the party after 22 MPs voted in his favor. Congress has 37 MPs in Bagmati.
