Physical Infrastructure and Transport Minister Devendra Dahal has said that the transport system of Kathmandu Valley is problematic. Addressing a conference on 'Sustainable, Safe and Inclusive Transport for Vibrant and Cultural Kathmandu Valley' in Lalitpur on Sunday, Minister Dahal said that the transport situation has deteriorated significantly since the last master plan made in 2012 and updated in 2017.

''Kathmandu Valley comprising the districts of Kathmandu, Lalitpur and Bhaktapur is the center of economic, cultural and administrative activities of Nepal. But the transport system here is very problematic," said Minister Dahal.

Nepal's constitution, long-term vision 2043, 16th Periodic Plan, National Transport Policy envisages Nepal with a prosperous, inclusive and clean environment, he says. He said that the Kathmandu Valley Urban Transport System Master Plan Project aims to reduce the environmental burden and sustainable economic growth by addressing important problems such as traffic jams and air pollution.

'Severe traffic jams, delays and air pollution have increased due to increasing number of vehicles, haphazard urbanization and inadequate infrastructure. These reasons are affecting not only the daily transportation, but also economic productivity and public health," said Minister Dahal. He claims that if decisive steps are not taken now, the situation will worsen.
