Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ajay Kumar Chaurasia has said that no law has been brought to encourage polygamy. Minister Chaurasia made this commitment while understanding the memorandum submitted by the Nepal Women's Association to the ministry on Sunday.
Minister Chaurasia claims that the government is going to amend the law to ensure the rights of children born from 'wrong' relationships. He has requested not to publicize that the draft is the government's opinion as it is under discussion in the cabinet committee and has not been fully prepared.
The government is about to introduce a law to exempt polygamy under certain circumstances, which has been completely prohibited since 1 August 2075, the day the Criminal Code came into effect. Article 175 of the Code is going to be amended so that if a married man becomes pregnant or gives birth to a child while extending his relationship with another woman, the second marriage will be maintained.
The law ministry has already prepared its draft . According to the ministry, preparations for amending the law have been made as women have become victims of the legal situation where second marriage is impossible.
What did Minister Chaurasia say?
As drafted, there is no polygamy in it . The law has been amended for the child's rights in the case of pregnancy due to a wrong relationship (incorrectly, a relationship in which a woman cheats a man and a man cheats a woman). With that amendment or if that amendment is not necessary, it will also be removed . If a man has a false relationship with a woman, but also if a woman has a false relationship with a man, the law will be made to make both parties part of the law . If both are willing, nothing will happen . In order to suppress polygamy, just as men are punished, women are also punished . It is about the rights of the child . He has no fault, why punish him . To maintain his dynasty or not ? If the man did it fraudulently, should he pay the compensation for the woman or not? The arrangement for payment of adequate compensation has gone for revision. Not to encourage polygamy. There are no daughters in our house ? Will we introduce laws to make it difficult for women tomorrow? If there is any wrong meaning from the word, we will amend that too .
