Speaker Devraj Ghimire has said that social media and digital media are helping parliamentarians to get people's participation in policy making.
Addressing the Sixth World Conference of Speakers of Parliament in Geneva, Switzerland, Speaker Ghimire said that the development of technology along with social media has made it easier for policy makers. Speaker Ghimire participated in the panel discussion on 'What can be the role of parliaments in building our digital future?'.
Speaker Ghimire also said that digital technology has provided an important opportunity to increase transparency, efficiency and public participation in the functioning of Parliament. "Technologies such as online broadcasting, e-parliament system, digital records and electronic voting system have made the functioning of the parliament modern, effective and accessible to everyone," Speaker Ghimire said, "I would like to inform you that we are studying the use of artificial intelligence in the legislative administration in the federal parliament which is being built based on modern technology in Nepal. Speaker Ghimire said that parliament's work system can be made more effective by practicing machine learning, data center, digitization, speech-to-text technology. "Such technologies strengthen the relationship between Parliament and the public". Speaker Ghimire said that the problems of misuse of technology such as false information, misleading propaganda, and deep fake are also increasing. The responsibility of promoting digital literacy along with the use of technology is on the shoulders of parliamentarians. It is very important to give priority to the budget increase in the technology sector," he said, "resources should be ensured in digital infrastructure, cyber security, internet literacy and data security. In an era of rapid digital change, parliamentarians must become institutions that lead, not lag behind. Today, I believe that the power of parliamentarians is not only in words, but in digital access and public trust.
Speaker Ghimire went to Geneva on July 11 to participate in the World Conference of Parliamentarians. This conference is held every five years. The Speaker is scheduled to return home next Sunday.
