In Madhesh province, which is becoming a 'transit' of drugs, the police have launched a campaign against thali users and dealers. As all the eight districts of Madhesh province are connected to the Indian border, the investigation of the police has shown that the drug trade takes place from this border to Kathmandu.
Due to the easy access to the border Indian market and the open sale of drugs, the addiction rate is high in Madhesh province. According to the Madhesh Pradesh Police Office in Janakpur, drugs worth around 230 million have been recovered within a year. In which large quantities of marijuana, hashish, brown sugar and opium have been recovered.
During one year, 15,442 kilograms of ganja have been recovered, the value of which is equivalent to Rs. 186 million. Similarly, five hundred and eight kilograms of hashish has been recovered, the value of which is equal to Rs. Three kilos of 200 grams of brown sugar worth 15 lakhs and 46 kilograms of opium worth 25 lakhs have also been seized. Also, 375 thousand 736 tablets, injections and bottles of narcotic drugs have been recovered, the value of which is equal to 167 million.
DIG Umaprasad Churtubedi, head of Madhesh Pradesh police office, said, 'There was a big network of drugs in Madhesh province. The police have conducted a campaign and tightened up all the eight districts. A large number of traders have been arrested and drugs have been seized.' According to him, 522 of the 584 cases related to drugs were registered in one year.
According to police data, economic crime, suicide, drugs and road accidents are increasing in Madhesh province. DIG Churtubedi said, 'A large network of drug trafficking, misuse and trafficking has been arrested. It seems that drugs are being sent and imported to Kathmandu and other areas through Madhesh border.' He said that cooperation at all levels is necessary to control drugs and prevent suicide.
According to the Madhesh Pradesh Police Office, 1,253 people have committed suicide in Madhesh Province during one year. Out of them, 215 people died due to drowning, 138 due to electrocution and 19 due to fire.
Police have recovered 16 small weapons and 19 large weapons in Madhesh province. According to DIG Churtubedi, cases of smuggling and revenue evasion have also been tightened in Madhesh province. He said, 'Trafficking and revenue evasion are not what they used to be, but they have not been able to control them as expected. For this, all the partner agencies should work together by making a joint strategy.'
Nepal Police has seized customs evasion goods worth one billion 3597 lakh 27 thousand rupees from Madhesh province in the last one year.
