The federal monitoring team has come to Birganj on Thursday to understand the situation in Madhesh province which has been affected by drought due to drought. The team, which is coordinated by Sushil Acharya, joint secretary of the Ministry of Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation, took information about the problem from the stakeholders in Parsa and Bara. Due to the drought, the Union Government has declared Madhesh as a disaster prone area.

In the discussion, District Coordination Committee Parsa Chairman Niranjan Sonar said that there are 22 overhead tanks in Parsa but only 5 are operational. He said that apart from Parsagadhi and Patervasugoli Rural Municipality, the other 12 municipalities of the district are in dire condition of both drinking water and agriculture. He informed that although there is good planting in half a dozen municipalities near Gandak canal, there is no significant planting in other municipalities. 

District Coordinating Committee Bara chairman Narendra Sah said that drought and drought problems have been occurring regularly in Madhesh since last three years. He says that preparation is necessary before the disaster appears. For this, construction of overhead tanks should be given priority, Shah said. Jalandhar Singh, head of Pacharuta Municipality in Bara, suggested that water should be taken from India not only for the annual paddy crop but also for the Chaite paddy crop in the Gandak Canal. He argued that this would recharge the water level in the area around the canal. He also emphasized on improving the structure of Gandak Canal.  Joint Secretary Acharya, coordinator of the

monitoring team, said that there were suggestions such as incomplete water supply and irrigation projects, operation of tubewells, changes in the schedule of water coming into the Gandak Canal, conservation of Chure and construction of large ponds in Chure area, improvement of electricity voltage in bad conditions. He informed that the monitoring team will submit its report within seven days after collecting the suggestions received and data from the concerned offices. The monitoring team includes Vasu Timalsena, Deputy Director of Irrigation Management Division, Prakash Kumar Sanjel, Director General of Agriculture

Department, Balamukund Shrestha, Deputy Director General of Water Supply Department and others.
