The Revenue Investigation Department, which investigates and prosecutes non-tax revenue leakage, has been without a leader for more than three weeks.

The department under the Prime Minister's Office has become director general for the first time in eight years. Chandi Prasad Ghimire, director general of the

department, retired on June 15 and no new appointment has been made. According to the staff of the department, the post of Director General has never been vacant since 2074. Since the end of June, Deputy Director General Krishna Kumari Shrestha has been assigned the permanent position of Director General after the employees of the department complained that in the absence of a Director General, the daily administration is only being carried out and the old 'pending' tasks are replaced.

The department as a quasi-judicial body is considered to be very influential . The department also has the authority to investigate and investigate the government's foreign exchange related offences. Since it is connected with economic activities, there is a competition between the joint secretaries to be transferred to the department . After placing the department under the Prime Minister's Office, the Joint Secretary of Administration Services can also become the Director General . Before 2074, only the joint secretary of the revenue group was the director general of the department.

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli made a decision to put the department under the supervision of the Prime Minister on 13 February 2074 by bringing managerial reforms to control revenue leakage more effectively. Before that, the department was under the Ministry of Finance. The director general of the department will be transferred quickly and after the change of government, the old ones will be removed and a new joint secretary will be sent.

In the report submitted by the high-level economic reform suggestion commission formed last October under the chairmanship of former finance secretary Rameshwar Khanal, it is recommended to abolish the revenue research department. It is mentioned in the report that because of the tax and customs act only action can be taken, the revenue investigation department is only causing trouble and suffering to the businessmen.
