A new species of bird has been confirmed in Madhyapur Thimi Manohara area of Bhaktapur.
A bird called the Siberian Sand Plover has been recorded. The bird was found by a team including Kumud Parajuli, Supradeep Neupane and Shatruhan Pandey on June 6.
'It was raining heavily, suddenly we saw a bird like a Tibetan sand plover and took a photo,' Neupane told Kantipur, 'When we came home and saw something different, we sent it for confirmation.'
After the initial identification, details along with photos were sent to the Nepal Ornithologists' Association for confirmation. The new bird was confirmed after studying the received information and consulting with national and international ornithologists, the association said in a statement on Tuesday.
The Nepali name of this bird is Siberian Rajputrika . This bird is found in Siberia, Mongolia, Finland, Taiwan, Tibet, India, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, Afghanistan, Taiwan, Tibet, Bhutan and other areas. According to the IUCN Red List, this bird is in the endangered list.
With this bird, the number of bird species in Nepal has reached 902 according to the Nepal Ornithologists Association.
