Press Council reminds state agencies Jurisdiction: Journalist code of conduct and freedom of the press

The Press Council of Nepal has recalled its jurisdiction saying that the interference of state agencies has increased in the matter of journalistic code of conduct and freedom of the press.

The Council has asked the state agencies to be responsible and not interfere with the Council's jurisdiction on serious issues such as journalistic code of conduct and press freedom. 

The Press Council published a statement on Thursday and said, "As the Council is fulfilling its responsibilities and obligations, the Press Council once again requests the related agencies of the State of Nepal to be clear about their jurisdiction so as not to get confused and take any decision on serious matters such as journalistic code of conduct and press freedom." 

Council member Ramprasad Dahal chaired the meeting after  In a statement issued by the Senior Administrative Officer and Spokesperson Khanal Deepak Khanal, it has been clarified that the Press Council Nepal is functioning within the purpose of the Preamble, Section 5 and Section 7 of the Press Council Act, 2048. 

In section 5, the council reminded that the above-mentioned environment for the development of healthy journalism, to set a code of ethics for journalism to prevent the abuse of press freedom, to maintain cordial relations between the press and the government of Nepal, to maintain public morality and the dignity of citizens, and to strive not to interfere with the freedom of the press and the dignity of journalism.
