Due to the flood in Bhotekoshi, about 1 km section of Syafrubensi-Rasuwagadhi road was swept away, communication between Timure and Rasuwagadhi was broken for 9 days. Due to non-operation of the 16 km road connecting Syafrubansi and Rasuwagadhi, trade with China has not only come to a standstill, there is also a risk of food crisis in Rasuwa including Gosainkund.
Kaisang Nurpu Tamang, Chairman of Gosainkunda Rural Municipality, said that if the road is not restored within two weeks, there will be food shortage in the village. "So far, there is no food problem," he said, "If the road is not opened for another two weeks, it is certain that there will be food shortage in Timure, Rasuwagadhi and other places."
He says that food is being prepared in Dhunche and Syafrubensi to be taken to the village after the road is opened. The road connection with Timure was broken after the flood in Bhotekoshi washed away the road on the morning of June 24. The flood has swept away the entire two-section road leading to Timure. Roads are broken and cracked in places. Shubraj Neupane, Head of Federal Road Supervision and Approval Office, said that the road washed away by a landslide near Timure has been dug up.
"In Lingling, 120 meters of road was damaged, the wall has been cut and stones have been taken out, 50 meters of road is still left to be built, the river that flows directly towards the wall has also been diverted," Neupane said, "Now, work is being done to bring small vehicles into operation on the flood-damaged road from Friday." Now the road has been built to carry essential goods and operate an ambulance in the village.
"In the second phase, road work will be carried out to allow cargo vehicles to move," Neupane said, "for that we will proceed after talking with the Chinese government." Out of the 16 km road from Syafrubensi to Rasuwagadhi, 3 km from Syafrubensi and 4 km from Timure to Rasuwagadhi are open. According to the road department, it has been completed even though there is a problem on the 9 km road.
Deputy Subba Chandiraj Gelal of Rasuwa Customs Office said that the customs post is now deserted due to import-export stoppage. According to preliminary reports, 20 cargo vehicles were swept away by the flood. "Details of the total damage have not yet been received," he said, "Also, 32 out of the 42 electric vehicles of CG Motors have been washed away, 10 have been completely damaged by the flood." Goods have not yet been removed from the cargo vehicle with apples stuck in the flood in the customs yard.
"Where to take the apples, that's why they haven't been taken out yet, there are four such vehicles," said Gelal, "12 vehicles bringing apples from China have stopped at Kerung." Where there are other vehicles with prepared goods.
"Approximately 200 electric vehicles which have been brought from China and are in the process of passing the customs inspection are parked on the road from Timure to Rasuwagadhi," Gelal said, "50 cargo vehicles are in the process of customs inspection." 35 cargo vehicles going to China to take goods have also stopped in Timure. 100 cargo vehicles pass through Rasuwa crossing every day.
In the financial year 2081/82, Rasuwa Customs had set a target of collecting 30 billion rupees in revenue. The customs office had collected revenue of 29 billion 86 million till Monday. ``To meet the target, 140 million rupees of revenue had to be collected,'' Gelal said, ``If the border was open for the entire period, the target could have been achieved.''
Waiting for Beijing's response, the government
The government is waiting for Beijing's response to rebuild the Miteri bridge between Nepal and China, which was washed away by floods. Although the government has asked the Chinese side for an opinion on the reconstruction of the bridge, Beijing has not sent a reply. Since it connects two countries, the consent of both parties is necessary for its reconstruction.
Keshav Kumar Sharma, Secretary of the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport, confirmed that no response has been received from China regarding the construction of Miteri Bridge. "Because it is a friendship bridge, we cannot build it without China's consent, China can't build it without our consent," Sharma said.
"We are preparing to meet the Chinese ambassador Chan Song on this matter, the ambassador has also informed us that he is waiting for a decision from China," he said, "Due to the bridge, imports and exports have stopped, we are trying to find out how to build the bridge by Dasain." Floods have damaged the 25 km road from Rasuwagadhi to Kerung.
"After the flood swept away the bridge, neither the cargo vehicles from China nor the goods from Nepal have been able to come," Subba Chandiraj Gelal, deputy of the Rasuwa Customs Office, said, "The first crowded customs point is now deserted." There is no rush to build the bridge now.
Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli had said that on the day of the flood, he would take initiatives with friendly country China to quickly build a bridge connecting the two countries, Kaisang Nurpu Tamang, Chairman of Gosainkund Rural Municipality, said, "Chadbad is approaching, preparations for that will come to Nepal through China, and goods will be exported from Nepal to China."
"Since there is no bridge, there is no revenue at the Rasuwa customs post, and the jobs of the locals are also lost," Tamang said.
