If the employer-trade union did not agree on '1500', the government itself will determine the minimum wage

What you should know

Since the employer and the trade union could not agree on 1500 rupees, the Minimum Wage Determination Committee has not been able to determine the minimum wage of the workers that should be implemented from today. Now the Ministry of Labour, Employment and Social Security itself is going to determine the minimum wage of the workers.

The government formed a committee under the coordination of Labor Relations and Social Security Division Chief Pradeep Koirala with the participation of trade unions and employers to determine the minimum wage. The committee's meeting held on Wednesday failed to determine the minimum wage. The committee has recommended the government to determine the minimum wage. According to a member of the

committee, the employers were adamant that they could not go above 19,500 rupees. The United Trade Union Coordination Center had demanded a salary of Rs 30,000,443. But the trade unions were ready to agree if 21 thousand rupees were fixed. Since the employer cannot rise above 19,500, it has recommended the government to determine the salary.

At present, the salary of Nepali workers except for tea plantations is fixed at 17 thousand 300 rupees with allowances. In which the basic salary was 10 thousand 820 and dearness allowance was 6 thousand 480 . The hourly wage of the laborer is 89 rupees. In this, the workers get Rs 56 as basic wages and Rs 33 as dearness allowance. The basic hourly wage for part-time workers is Rs 95.

2080 This salary, implemented from July 1, has expired on June 32. According to the Labor Act-2074, a new minimum wage must be fixed every two financial years. The government increased the salary by 15.33 percent (2300 rupees) compared to the previous salary at that time.

The subject of determining the minimum wage according to the demands of the workers is set to be raised in the meeting of the Central Labor Advisory Committee chaired by Labor, Employment and Social Security Minister Sharat Singh Bhandari on Thursday.

Labor Minister Bhandari said that he is preparing to determine the new salary based on the situation of employers and workers. The government wanted the new salary to be determined through agreement between the workers and employers. For the last two months, both sides were in discussions. The government was only coordinating in this," Bhandari said. "Both sides could not stand together in this. Now the Ministry of Labor will determine the salary itself.'

Trade unions have warned that they will strike if the salary is not fixed. "We were looking for a basis to determine the minimum wage." It was based on the price of food and non-food. The market price that we set and that set by the employer is different," said Dhan Bahadur Bishwakarma, senior vice president of the All Nepal Trade Union Federation (ANTUF), "if the salary is determined unfairly to the workers, we have no choice but to go on strike."

According to Labor Force Survey-2017 in Nepal, 7 million 86 thousand workers are employed in the internal labor market. Out of this, 4.446 million are men and 2.64 million are women. Only 26 lakh 75 thousand people are employed in the formal sector. Majority of 44 lakh 11 thousand people (62.2 percent) are working in informal sector. Out of this, 14 lakh 34 thousand are employed in the agricultural sector and 29 lakh 4 thousand are employed in the non-agricultural sector. According to the statistics of the Ministry, 73 thousand people are employed in domestic labor.
