Demand to make an effective law to end the bad practice of chaupadi etc

All Nepal Mahila Sangh (Socialist) has demanded to make an effective law against Chhaupadi and other crimes. Munu Sigdel, president of the association, issued a statement and demanded the government to make an effective law against the existing malpractice in the society.

Referring to the death of 30-year-old Kamala Auji of Kanchanpur Krishnapur Municipality-1 Nigali due to snakebite in her neighborhood, the association demanded to make an effective law to permanently prevent such incidents.

The association says that it is unfortunate that such incidents are repeated when the law itself has declared the Chhaupadi system illegal.

Section 168 sub-section (3) of the Criminal Code Act, 2074 has taken Chhaupadi practice as an offense related to discrimination and humiliating behavior.

Also, there is a provision that women should not be kept in confinement or subjected to any other kind of discrimination, untouchability or inhuman treatment during menstruation or childbirth. However, in many rural areas of the Far West, even today, the bad practice of keeping menstruating women in cowsheds still exists.
