28-year-old Narayan Singh Budhatok from Beas Rural Municipality-2 Lower Dumling, who went to buy consumer goods, fell from the Tuin and went missing in the Mahakali River. Vyas-2 Ward President Dhiransinh Budhathoki said that Narayan Singh, who went to the Indian market for shopping on Tuesday afternoon, fell into the Mahakali while swimming.
Narayan Singh fell into the river Mahakali when the pillar (pole) on which the tuin was tied on the Indian side broke. Dhiransingh said that among the other two people who were with him, one has crossed (India) and the other is in Wari (Nepal).
Although the government has repeatedly announced that Tuin will be displaced, it has been limited to speech . In October 2072, when KP Sharma Oli took office as the Prime Minister for the first time, he announced that 'Nepal will be Tuin-free within two years'. Even now, Oli is the prime minister. In 2072, the government has repeated the same thing in its policies and programs to displace Tuin within 2 years. In the policy and program of the fiscal year 2082/83, there is an announcement to replace the entire Tuin and construct a suspension bridge.
In Darchula, more than half a dozen tuins are kept in the area above the headquarter. Residents of Byas Rural Municipality-2 and 5 still have to travel to India via Mahakali from Tuin for shopping and medical treatment and to reach their own district headquarters. Mahakali tarda accidents happen by sticking ropes or iron wires around trees, stones or poles.
On Tuesday, Narayan Singh Budhathoki went missing after falling from the tuin on the Mahakali river at Vyas-2 Dumling.
District Police Chief DSP Prakash Dahal said that while going from Dumling (Nepal) towards India, Narayan Singh fell into the Mahakali river after catching a rope. He said that it was found that Tuin was used illegally to cross the Dumling towards Nepal and Garbhadhar area towards India. The police said that two other people who went to Tuin Tarn together are safe.
According to the police, local 26-year-old Jitu Bista and 45-year-old Jaydu Budhathoki also went from Tuin to Mahakalipari along with Narayan. Narayan Singh started climbing after Jitu had crossed the Mahakali. When he reached the middle of the river, the pole that tied Tuin broke and fell into the river and disappeared. Nepal Police, Armed Police and locals are searching in the area below Dumling.
According to the ward president Budhathoki, Sundarsingh Bhandari of Dumling went missing after falling from Tuin last year. He said that Narayan disappeared and Sundersingh's death are different. Last year, 18-year-old Sachin Budhathoki from Dumling area also went missing in Mahakali. All these three people have fallen from Tuin in different ways', Ward President Budhathoki said, 'Every year some people from here fall from Tuin and fall into Mahakali.' Locals have requested the government several times for the construction of a suspension bridge near Dumling Basti, but there has been no response so far, said Budathaki, the ward president. Locals complain that the government has not responded to the demand despite requests for the construction of suspension bridges in half a dozen places in Mahakali. Ward president Budhathoki said that Dumling residents are most in need of a bridge.
Bridges have been built over Mahakali at 5 places in Beas Rural Municipality to connect Nepal-India in the area above Darchula headquarters. There is an old Kathe bridge in Sitapul, the highest area, while new suspension bridges have been constructed in other 4 places. It takes two hours to reach the Jholunge Bridge in Malghat in Ward No. 2 from Lower Dumling, the place where the accident occurred on Tuesday. Another suspension bridge is in Malghatte of Ward No. 4.
Tigaram of Ward No. 5, Badugaon of Ward No. 6 also has suspension bridges. It is far from their settlement to cross the bridge and the road leading to the bridge is not easy. Every year one/two people have been disappearing in Mahakali from these illegal tuins . In the year 2078, Jaisingh Dhami disappeared after falling into Mahakali from Tuin. The year before that, 10-year-old Dipendra Bisht of Vyas-4 Dokat went missing. There is not even a footpath on the Nepalese side to go to this area which is not accessible by transport. Locals have been using India's road to come to their own district headquarters.
Even now residents of Vyas-2 Dumling and Budi and Ward No.-5 Dhaulakot cross the Mahakali through Tuin. Because of the geographical difficulty and lack of suspension bridge, the locals are relying on you to cross the Mahakali river. Residents of this area complain that they have to use the Indian road through Tuin for basic work such as shopping for consumer goods, medical treatment, and so on.
"You have to walk for at least two hours from our settlement to use the suspension bridge," Prabhakar Budhathoki of Vyas-2 Dumling said, "Since you have to walk up to go through the bridge, we consider it easier to take the opposite route from Tuin." Although they demanded to build a suspension bridge nearby, they did not listen.'
