The prison in Dhangadhi has more prisoners than its capacity. Bodh Bahadur Khatri, Jailer of Kailali Prison, said that there are currently 674 prisoners in the prison with a capacity of 200 people. There are 57 female inmates in the jail.

Established in 1997 at Sthal, this prison has become dilapidated. Three/four times more inmates are added every year than the capacity of the prison. In the prison, there are prisoners who have been convicted in cases of a serious nature, including murder, crimes related to life, kidnapping and extortion, and prisoners who have not been sentenced.

According to prison sources, the number of people involved in the crime of drug trafficking, consumption and dealing is increasing in recent years. "Currently, 50 percent of the inmates in the prison have been arrested for drug-related crimes," said a prison employee.

There are 2 separate rooms for women inside the jail. There is a separate room and hall for male prisoners. Almost everyone is sleeping on the floor. The prison complex spread over an area of 4 bighas is located at the top of Dhangadhi market area.

Due to which the area around the prison is flooded during the rainy season. On Monday, water had entered inside the prison. 'But it is not a situation where it cannot be completely submerged, even though the prison is old in a dilapidated condition, regular maintenance has been going on,' Jailer Khatri said.

According to Jailer Khatri, preparations are being made to build a new modern physical infrastructure in place of the current old structure of Kailali Jail. "A detailed project report worth Rs. 540 million for new physical infrastructure has been prepared and sent to the prison department," Jailer Khatri said, "It is not known when the new prison will be built, but the process has already started."
