Humla headquarter Simkot is connected to the national road network. Humla has become the 77th district to be connected to the national road network after Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli inaugurated the belay bridge built on the Karnali River at Kharpunath Rural Municipality-5 Chuvakhola in Humla on Sunday.
With the construction of this Belybridge on the Karnali Corridor, now the Chinese border of Hilsa is connected to the Indian border of Jamuna (Rupaidia).
After it took time to build a concrete bridge, the 14th division of the Nepali Army built a belay bridge in Chuwakhola. Last year in the last week of March, after the army opened the 286 km track under the Karnali Corridor, transport vehicles started running up to Simkot. But Humla was not connected to the national road network because there was no bridge at Chuwakhola.
"Unless there was a bridge, vehicles had to be operated in 3 sections before, passengers were hit by high fares," said Narayan Pandey, chief district officer of Humla, "Now it is possible to go from the Indian border crossing Jamunah (Rupaidia) to Hilsa on the Chinese border in one vehicle. The distance from Rupaidia to Hilsa is about 505 kilometers.
The Karnali Corridor, which starts from Khulalu in Kalikot, also connects Bajura and Humla. With the construction of the bridge, Humli's road dream has been fulfilled after 26 years. According to the Simkot-Hilsa road project office, in 2054, around 50 local people died due to viral influenza that spread along with starvation in Humla, and the then district development committee planned to connect the road with China for a permanent solution to the food shortage.
In 2057, the construction of the Simkot-Hilsa road was started using the internal resources of the District Development Committee (JIVIS), and the road was continued from 2058 by the World Food Program by conducting the 'Food for Work' program. Similarly, from 2059 to 2065, Jivis spent 68 million rupees and continued the construction of roads, but the work could not be done at a fast pace. Project information officer Omprakash Kohar said that after the
, excavators were purchased and road work was done. According to him, the government established the Hilsa-Simkot Road Project Office in Chait 2069 for the construction of the road, and from 5 Chait 2071, the army was given the task of road construction. The army opened the track in the last week of March last year after nearly 10 years. Engineer Kohar informed that about 7 billion rupees were spent on road construction.
Chief Minister of Karnali Province Yamlal Kandel said that the completion of the Karnali Corridor is expected to help the development of the entire Karnali Province. With the construction of the road, most of the districts of Karnali from Hilsa in China have been connected to Rupaidia in India, he informed. "Now we can get commercial benefits by establishing relations with China and India," he said. "It is necessary for the government to start a diplomatic initiative soon and develop this road as a commercial route," he said, "which will help in marketing local products by creating enough employment opportunities."
Under the Karnali Corridor, the road is currently being upgraded through two planning offices. 123 km in the South section (Khulalu-Salisala) and 146 km under the Northern section (Salisala-Hilsa) are being upgraded under the scheme. The Southern Division office is at Bajura. The Northern Section office is at Simkot. Head of Khulalu-Sallisalla road planning office, Tularam Sharma said that road widening, paving, gravel and black sheeting are in progress in 5 sections, namely Pilichour-Tumch, Tumkot-Hilsa, Elbang-Chyachda, Chyachda-Hekpakhola, Kuwadi-Tumch.
According to him, the road is being upgraded with a budget of about 3 billion rupees. Under the corridor, 10 rivers, 6 in the southern section and 4 in the northern section, and belay bridges have been constructed on the Karnali river. Headquarter Simkot is 12 km from Chuwakhola, where the bridge was inaugurated on Sunday. The 95 km road from Simkot to Hilsa was commissioned two years ago.
