After the convention was confirmed, two central members of Tarun Dal broke their fast to death for four days.
Central members of Tarun Dal, Rodan Rai and Ambika Baskota, have been on a fast to death at the party's central office, Sanepa since Sunday, demanding the dissolution of the central committee of more than 400 members led by Vidhan Gurung and the formation of another ad-hoc committee to ensure the convention.
They gave up their hunger strike after ensuring that the party would hold the convention and not the Tarun Dal. According to the central member Ajay Babu Sivakoti, the party has instructed that the central steering committee under the leadership of joint general minister Dina Upadhyay will do all the work of the convention on November 26-28.
Although an ad-hoc committee was formed under the leadership of Gurung from 2078 with the task of holding a convention, the said committee has not been able to hold a convention even in one district.
The party is going to take charge of the convention by adding 6 months to the Gurung-led committee. "The party has already given the responsibility of the convention to the steering committee with the mandate, the party conducts the convention," he said. Tarun Dal has not been able to hold a session for 7 years.
The central working committee is going to extend the deadline of 6 months to other fraternal organizations as the last chance for the convention. A new working committee was elected under the leadership of Jitjung Basnet from the convention held in Pokhara in 072. The leaders selected the leadership and some office bearers on the basis of quotas without allowing elections to be held in the convention. After the party convention of 078, the working committee was dissolved and a new ad hoc committee was formed under the chairmanship of Gurung.
The hunger strikers had been demanding the dissolution of the ad hoc committee led by Gurung, saying that the organization was being run in an arbitrary manner against the constitution, that in the name of expanding the organization, rebellion was being done in all the districts through the cadres close to them, and controversial decisions were being made in a singular manner against the party's decision.
Not only the Tarun Dal, most of the fraternal organizations of the Congress are in disarray after not being able to hold a convention for years. The Farmers' Federation, which started as an ad-hoc committee in November 2006, has been ad-hoc for 18 years. Its convention has not been held since its inception.
Tharu and the Sports Association have been running on ad hoc basis since its inception. Mahila Sangh held its convention in 2073 and Dalit Sangh in 2069. Since then, there has been no other convention.
Most of the 13 fraternal organizations of the Congress, which will have a three-year term, have run on ad hoc basis.
