Speaker Devraj Ghimire has said that Parliament should be developed as an institution that takes decisions in favor of the people and strengthens public faith in the system.

Speaking at a program organized on the occasion of Parliament Day, 2082 held in Kathmandu on Monday, Speaker Ghimire emphasized that Parliament should not be a platform for debates, speeches and sloganeering. He said that by making the role of Parliament result-oriented, strong initiatives should be taken to remove people's aversion to the republic.

Speaker Ghimire said, 'Parliament is not a place for speeches and slogans. It should be developed as a platform for action, decision-making and results. Parliament should play an important role in strengthening the faith of the people.'

According to him, the main need and duty of the present time is to frustrate the efforts to increase the people's distaste for the republic. He said that the Parliament should stop such efforts and maintain the hope and trust of the people.

Speaker Ghimire pointed out the need to address the current multifaceted challenges by using the experience, knowledge and skills of former parliamentarians. He said, 'The qualifications and abilities of former parliamentarians should be used to face the current challenges. Parliament and the government seem to have to do more for that.'

The need for a strong secretariat

Speaker Ghimire also said that there is a need for a strong secretariat to make Parliament effective. He mentioned that not only the effectiveness of the parliament, but also the parliamentary system itself is being questioned, so all parties should unite to protect the system.
