Two km north of Parsa Bazar in the eastern part of Chitwan on the east-west highway, a house covered with zinc can be seen. 92-year-old Khadgkumari Gajurel lives with her eldest son Janardhan in that house in Khairhani Municipality-3 Dhusari. Khadg Kumari is spending her days under the zinc roof even in this time of scorching heat.

There is a greater sorrow than the heat of zinc in her heart. Khadg Kumari kept 1.6 million rupees in the Sahara Chitwan Multi-Purpose Cooperative Society to meet the expenses in her old age.

She has been sick for a year worrying about whether the money she kept by selling the land of her share will be returned. "He used to be aloof until the afternoon, he has not been so well for a year, he doesn't go out much, he talks about money from time to time," says his son Janardhan.

Concerned about his mother's condition, Janardan put this to Shalikram Duwadi, the coordinator of the Sahara Chitwan Cooperative Victims' Struggle Committee. Duwadi went to meet Khadgkumari at her house on Friday. Duwadi, who arrived with other friends of the Sangharsh Samiti, advised Khadg Kumari not to worry. "My everything is that money, bring it back as much as possible, father," Khadg Kumari requested with tears in her eyes.

Khadg Kumari's family migrated from Sindhupalchok and came to Suryapur in Jutapani, Chitwan in June 2026. After 6 years Khadg Kumari's husband Khadananda moved the family from Suryapur to Dhuseri further east. Khadananda passed away in 2067. The land added by the husband was also kept in the name of Khadg Kumari by adding the share of three brothers. As she grew older, Khadg Kumari felt a desire to spend the week.

The Gajurel family of the Vaishnava sect has great faith in Dharmakarma. Khadg Kumari's three sons consulted to fulfill their mother's wishes. He decided to sell the land in his mother's name when he could not meet the expenses of the week only with the help of his brothers. Son Janardan says that apart from selling the land, his mother also gave some money to the Devghat temple.

After that, the remaining 1.6 million rupees were opened by the sons in the name of the mother and kept in a fixed account in Parsa Bazar bank. The bank used to give 9 percent interest. Later, a cooperative in Khurkhure market, some east of Parsa, said that it would give 13 percent interest. From the bank they transferred the money to the cooperative.

A branch of Chitwan Sahara Cooperative opened in Parsa Bazar. The representative came home with an offer of 13.5 percent interest. Khadgkumari's three sons were not only attracted by the interest rate. Sahara's representative made an attractive offer to come to the house and pay the interest in three months.

"Mother's age was approaching, she was taking her away from home to find out how much interest, and whether she should come home to pay the interest," says Maila's son Hariprasad. But the younger Tikaram was of the opinion that he would not put money into the cooperative immediately. The Sahara representative did not stop running home. One day, Tikaram went to see the Parsa Seva Kendra in Sahara. The facilities there were better than those of a good bank. I thought there was no danger in keeping it. Later, after consulting with my brothers, we decided to move the money here," says Tikaram.

On 8 July 2079, he withdrew 6 lakh 50 thousand rupees and kept it in Sahara. On 30 July, he brought and deposited 950,000 rupees there. As per the terms, the interest amount came to the house in the first three months. But then Khadgkumari's family waited for interest. Gitendrababu (GB) Rai was the founder of the Chitwan Sahara Multi-Purpose Co-operative Society of Bharatpur and later expanded its branches to Parsa Bazar in Tandi and Khairhani in the eastern part of Ratnagar of the district. The savers stopped getting the money deposited in this cooperative. GB Rai was found to have invested savers' money in his other private companies against the rules.

Saver's Rs 11 crore went to GB Rai's Gorkha Media. Gurkha Media used to run Galaxy 4K TV. Ravi Lamichhane was one of the three directors of Gorkha Media. He was also its managing director. He later left TV and joined politics, becoming the MP of Chitwan-2 and the Home Minister.

A case has been filed in the Chitwan District Court against the chairman of the RSVP, Lamichhane, for misappropriating Sahara Cooperative savings funds. Although he was released from Chitwan on bail, Lamichhane is currently in Bhairahawa Jail after the High Court asked him to send him to jail in the Butwal cooperative case of a similar nature. GB Rai is absconding. 85 crore rupees of 6 thousand 334 savers of Chitwan have been trapped in that cooperative.

The owner of the cooperative embezzled the money of such an old woman. Our concern is to get the money back to the savers as soon as possible. Because the money of a very ordinary person like Khadg Kumari mother did not sink in this way,' says Shalikram Duwadi, coordinator of the Sangharsh Samiti, which was formed after the savings were not returned from the Sahara Cooperative. Janardhan says that the mother's mind became restless after not knowing whether the money would come from the cooperative.

``Mother is sleeping inside the house, what are you talking about in your heart? In this condition, we have not even been able to leave and go around," he says. Elderly people are obsessed with their money, no matter how little it is. They don't spend a lot of money on whatever they get. There are 70/80 people who give Dakshina after giving tika by Khadg Kumari on the occasion of Dasain and other festivals.

He says that he will donate his own money to everyone until he lives. How can a mother's mind be at peace when she can't use the money she has saved to buy food, medicine and even personal expenses?'' says Janardhan.
