The sugarcane farmers have formed a struggle committee saying that the subsidy amount has been cut. They have also warned that they will start a protest if the subsidy amount is not arranged immediately.
Earlier, the government was giving subsidies to farmers on the basis of production of Rs 70 per quintal. However, after the new budget did not mention anything about the subsidy amount, the meeting held in Hariwan of Sarlahi with the demand to get the subsidy amount formed the Sangharsh Committee under the chairmanship of Shyam Babu Rai. A 34-member Sangharsh Committee has been formed with representatives from Sarlahi, Sunsari, Morang, Bara, Nawalparasi, Sirha, Mahottari, Rautahat and other sugarcane-growing districts.
In the first phase, the farmers will meet Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli on June 20 to discuss the issue of solving the problem and then the program of the campaign will be decided, said Umeshchandra Yadav, President of Lumbini Province Sugarcane Farmers Committee and President of Pratappur Rural Municipality.
Farmers are in trouble after the sugar industry does not pay on time and the government also stops the subsidy. Shailendra Harijan, a sugarcane farmer of Nawalparasi Susta, said that since the sugarcane production will decrease in the coming days, the subsidy money received by the farmers should be given immediately. "The government has devalued the sweat of the farmers by withholding the subsidy due to the need to increase the subsidy amount," he said. 80 crore rupees had been allocated in the previous financial year. There is an arrangement for payment to the farmer's account by sending the amount through Kolenika. In every district, the committee under the coordination of the Assistant Chief District Officer has cut the budget this year because sugarcane is sold and paid by the industry.
The price was fixed at Rs 655 per quintal by the industrialists at Rs 585 per quintal and the government subsidizing Rs 70 per quintal. Farmers are waiting for subsidy after cutting sugarcane this year and selling it to the industry.
