The Tribal Tribes Commission has suggested that the starting point of the Kathmandu-Tarai/Madhes Expressway Road Project be maintained at Dukuchap located in Godavari Municipality-8 of Lalitpur. Commission Chairman Ram Bahadur Thapamar met Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli on Wednesday and handed over the report with the recommendations.
The Commission has given the report to help the Nepal government to send a response to the concern expressed by the working group under the office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights and the Special Rapporteur on the implementation of the Bagmati River Cleanup Improvement Project, which has led to the risk of displacement of the tribal Newar community and the violation of the human rights of the local residents, as the current entry point of the project is located at Fudol in Khokna of Lalitpur Metropolitan City-21.
The Human Rights and International Treaty Agreement Division of the Office of the Prime Minister and the Council of Ministers requested the Commission to give a recommendation report. The report mentions that the Khokna area has the religious and cultural heritage of the Newar community, so it is suitable to be transferred to Dukuchap.
In addition, it is also suggested that the government take informed and independent consent from the local tribal communities when conducting such projects.
