Prime Minister and UML President KP Sharma Oli has said that the 70-year age limit in the party has already failed. Inaugurating the 24th National Convention of All Nepal National Independent Students Union, Oli said that health and efficiency should be considered more than age in party leadership.
'70 years of age came . 70 years age subject has failed . Now I am going to be 74, I will retire at 70, didn't fail? Can't reduce the age by 4 years!,' said Oli.
Oli's statement was that leadership is sometimes repeated by necessity. Citing the example of Xi Jinping in China, President Oli said, 'Health does not help, the main thing is whether it works or not. In China, a rule was made that the president can only be elected twice. Despite the age limit of 65 years, the Chinese Communist Party brought Xi Jinping after seeing the need for his leadership. Now you have reached 72 - Xi Jinping .'
The UML secretariat meeting held in May 2080 removed the age limit of 70 years to be elected or nominated as the executive leadership of the party. The said meeting suspended the provisions of the statute that ``must not be 70 years of age to be elected or nominated as an officer or member of the executive committee''. In the 8th Congress of UML held in Butwal in 2065, it was arranged that the same executive position cannot be elected more than twice, while the 9th Congress held in Kathmandu in 2071 brought a provision of 70 years .
Modnath Prasrit took leave from the Butwal convention saying that he should not hold an executive position as he was getting older. Similarly, Bharat Mohan Adhikari and Siddilal Singh were separated from the executive responsibility of the party from the ninth convention held in Kathmandu. Satyanarayan Mandal left the party due to the 70-year provision in the 10th Congress.
UML's first legislative convention held in Godavari, Lalitpur in October 2078 explained that such a provision would apply to elected executives before reaching the age of 70. It was arranged to make President Oli comfortable. In November of the same year, Oli was elected as the president for the second time by the 10th Congress of UML in Chitwan.
