The US is going to cancel the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) facility for Nepali citizens. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) published a notice in the Federal Register on Monday and announced that the TPS program for Nepalis will officially end on August 5, 2025.

The Secretary of the Ministry, Christy Noem, stated that the decision was made after concluding that Nepal does not meet the TPS standards after the current situation of Nepal and inter-agency consultation. The ministry has requested the Nepalese who are currently living in the US based on TPS to prepare to return to their country if they do not have any other valid residential basis.

It is mentioned on the website of the US Citizenship and Immigration Services that those who want to return home from the US can use the 'CBP Home Mobile Application'.

After the 2015 earthquake, the US government allowed thousands of Nepalis to live and work in America through the TPS program. This program provides periodic and temporary legal recognition to citizens of eligible countries who are unable to return to their home country on humanitarian grounds. Although there were repeated attempts to cancel this program during the previous term of President Donald Trump, due to various issues and the decision of the Biden government, the time for the cancellation was being extended.

The announcement that the TPS program will no longer be provided to Nepalis has come in the wake of the wide-ranging changes in the US immigration and visa policy and the strictness of it.

The US Department of State has also suspended the process of setting the interview date for new student visas, while citizens of 12 different countries have already been banned from entering the US. As opposed to the Democrats' policy of being flexible on immigration issues, the Trump administration, which was re-elected to tighten immigration and regulate illegal immigration, has continued to add such programs as soon as it takes power.
