Ambulances and private vehicles carrying patients were running in the emergency department of Western Regional Hospital Pokhara. Before the emergency, a couple was waiting for a ride home in the waiting room. 58-year-old Bishnumaya Karki of Pokhara-30 Khudi Naharchowk has to go to the hospital twice a week due to kidney failure.

Her husband Shri Prasad Shrestha takes her to Western Regional Hospital every Friday and Tuesday. On Tuesday, after the dialysis was over, they had to wait two hours for the train to go home. "He used to come in the neighbor's private car in the morning, he would come back to pick it up at 12:30. Where did he go," Bishnumaya said. Mr. Prasad, who was sitting next to him, looked at the clock and added, 'It seems that he has taken the others.'

Bishnumaya reached the hospital at 6:30 in the morning and the dialysis was over in four hours. They were forced to pay expensive fares to private ones after the public vehicles did not run, and they became more restless after waiting for the vehicle at the hospital for almost 2 and a half hours. "It takes 2,000 to come and go," said Vishnumaya. The car would be cheaper.'

Gore Periyar from Tanahun Bhimad came to the same hospital on Tuesday to get a leg wound dressed. However, by the time he arrived, the ticketing time was over. "Tickets can be obtained from 7 am to 12 pm," he said, "It was late to find a car, and I couldn't get dressed." He is staying with his relatives in Pokhara-14 Khasi Bazar as he has to dress every week and it is difficult to go to the hospital when he returns to the village. On Tuesday morning, the daughter-in-law started looking for a vehicle to bring her to the hospital. After searching for an hour and a half, but not finding him, she brought Gore to the hospital in a transport vehicle.

But he was forced to return without treatment after coming to the hospital late. After the emergency, a known vegetable carrier brought it. Now, what will happen again tomorrow?,' Gore said. After not getting a vehicle to return home, he returned by riding a motorcycle on a ride-sharing service. He does not understand the reason why public transport is not running, but he urges the government to solve the problem quickly.

Commuters are in trouble when public transport is not running

The actions of the transport businessmen make private drivers panic

It has been 5 days since the public transport operators stopped driving here in protest against the 'ride sharing' regulations introduced by the Gandaki state government. The streets of Gorkha have also been disturbed for five days due to the misbehavior of the businessmen and laborers who came out on the road after stopping the traffic.

The public transport businessmen and workers gathered in Harmatari, Bahrkilo, Kattel Chowk and other areas are protesting by stopping private vehicles saying they are carrying passengers. People are also bothering the bus.

On Friday afternoon, the bus number Ba5K 5399, which was carrying passengers from Kathmandu, was vandalized in Barakhilo District Police Office Gorkha. Passengers were also abused and beaten by stopping private vehicles. Similarly, Krishnahari Devkota of Palungtar-10 Mirkot, who was returning home with a bolero, was beaten up at Bahrkilo Chowk on Saturday.

"I was returning with a bolero with a red number plate, he stopped at twelve kilos and suddenly waved his hand saying that he would drive the car during the protest," he said. Devkota complained that when he informed the traffic police after the beating, he was instead fined 2,000. "On the contrary, I was fined for driving against the purpose," he added, "I filed a complaint at the police station last night about the beating." But SP Bharat Vick of Gorkha, Zipra, said that there was no complaint about beatings and misbehaviour. "If someone comes to the group and informs us, we will provide security, no one can stop the public transport," he said.

Passengers are stranded since Friday as long and short distance vehicles are not running from Gorkha. Mahendra Prasad Dhakal of Siranchok-1 Kerabari says that he has to suffer because the bus does not run. There is also a problem in the transportation of consumables due to non-operation of cargo vehicles.

Deepak Bohra, president of Gorkha Daroodi Transport Services Pvt. Ltd., claimed that private vehicles did not stop during the shutdown. "If red plate vehicles were found to have illegally charged high fares, they would have stopped them and returned the fares. We have identified those who took them for private purposes and reported them to the police," he said. "We have not stopped school or tourist buses." Sometimes he would cry on the phone and sometimes he would fight with the bus driver.

Later, he cried about his painful condition and said, 'My mother is breathing her last in the hospital, I came from India to see her but there was no one to take her home from Dhangadhi.' Karun Oli of Sayal Rural Municipality of Doti has been working in India for three decades. He reached Dhangadhi at 6 am on Tuesday morning after getting the news that his mother had passed away.

Oli's mother is currently being treated at Doti Hospital. He complained that no one listened to him despite expressing his pain. As much as I tried to persuade the drivers, they all had the same answer, 'We have also stopped the traffic because we are victims.'

Oli later started looking for private vehicles. I will arrange an environment where I can reach Doti no matter what. If you are late, you will not be able to see your mother's face,' he appealed to many. When he did not get a car despite his efforts, he expressed his anger towards the government, "Is there a government in this country or not?" Can't even see the face of my dying mother alive? What is the government watching? How long will poor people like us suffer?'

At the bus park at Attaria in Kailali, another passenger was waiting for a bus to go to Lamkichuha since 7 am. When the bus stopped running, I tried to go to my brother's auto (e-rickshaw) but was not allowed. By Tuesday evening, many passengers were waiting for buses to depart at both Dhangadhi and Attaria bus parks in Kailali. But when the bus will run, it is not decided.

Commuters are in trouble when public transport is not running Passengers from Doti, Achham, Bajhang, Bajura, Baitadi, Darchula districts of Far West have stopped at Kailali. They are forced to stay in a hotel for three days. Hotel accommodation is being done, water is also being bought and consumed. From where will you get so much money?,' said a passenger who stopped at Dhangadhi bus park from Monday to go to Dadeldhura.

The public transport businessmen, who have been protesting against the 'Ride Sharing' regulations issued by the Gandaki state government, have now stopped the transport nationwide. Which has a direct impact on the Far West as well. Attariya and Dhangadhi bus parks in Kailali have been completely closed for public transport since Monday morning. Padam Sapkota, president of Sudurpaschim Transport Pvt. Ltd., said that after Gandaki province allowed vehicles with red number plates to carry passengers, other provinces also learned from them and stopped the traffic. He said that the transportation will be operated only if seven demands from the government are addressed.

Passengers are seen wandering around Attaria Bus Park, the main intersection of Far West, when the bus is not running. While the autorickshaws are running in Dhangadhi, the businessmen of Attaria have also stopped the autorickshaws. District Traffic Police Office Kailali Police Inspector Chandra Bahadur Deuba said that although the police used to transport emergency passengers from their vehicles in Kathmandu, it was not possible to provide that facility.

Narad Prasad Bhusal of Parbat, who came to Nepal from India through Sunauli crossing on Monday night, came to Butwal bus park on Tuesday morning to go home. Spent days hoping that the bus would run. Like him, a group of 7 people who were to reach Biratnagar carrying utensils and clothes in sacks were at the bus park.

Vasant Rishidev of the said group said that they came to Suryapura to build a bridge and when they were going home, they did not get a vehicle. "We don't even have money, we slept in the bus park all night, we have no food, we are still hungry," Vasant said.

Even though the transport businessmen are negotiating with the government by stopping the vehicles, no one has been able to pay attention to the fact that the journey of common people has been affected. No short or long distance buses ply on the main road of Rupandehi on Monday and Tuesday. Some who spent the night at the bus park in the hope that the bus would run, tried to reserve the vehicle, but were stuck because of the fear that the businessmen would do something. Even small vehicles, trippers, and jeeps have refused to take the stranded people to their destination.

Padam Bahadur Bhat, who came to Butwal three days ago to go to Japan from Arghakhanchi and stayed in a guest house, is worried because his money is running out. He is under stress that his visa will be canceled if he is not able to fly within a week. He said that he could not go because he could not pay the expensive fare for a small car and the public transport operators threatened him not to drive it. Many passengers stranded at Butwal Bus Park on Tuesday were saying that they are having trouble getting to their destination as they have run out of money to pay for fares and stay in hotels.

Atul Soni's family, who arrived in Butwal in an autorickshaw from Gorakhpur, India, by paying 800 rupees, were saying that they had no choice but to go back by car. His family of four arrived in Butwal to visit Kathmandu.

He said, 'How difficult it is for Bachchasit, when we had to stop on the way to visit, we got stuck.' Similarly, people from Pokhara, Pyuthan, Rolpa and Haraiya who came home from India on vacation were also waiting for the bus at the bus park. Tilak Pun of Pyuthan said, "We didn't know about the traffic stop, we were sad, it's been two days here, it's not safe to drive." He said that he, his family and friends had also come and could not leave him alone.

He said that most of the passengers were stuck on the road after running out of money. "We have run out of money, and a friend who is going to Pokhara has borrowed 6,000 from home and is sitting in a hotel waiting for the bus," he said. Passengers complain that they have to wait day and night in hot summer, but there is no one to see the problem. Even to reach here from across the border, Nepalis or Indians who have entered from India are forced to pay expensive fares in e-rickshaws and small vehicles.

Waiting for the car at the bus park since morning

Since Monday, the public transport means are not running, passengers who have left for special business are also stranded in Bardia. Two girls from Dhangadhi-12 Manohara in Kailali were waiting for a vehicle since Tuesday morning at Gulria Bus Park, which was deserted due to the suspension of public transport. We did not know that the car was closed. Anjali Choudhary of Manohara said, "We came in the middle of the road and got sad." Simta Raji, who was with her, said that she had been waiting for the bus since morning at Gulria Bus Park.

Gopaldatta Joshi of Ajaymeru-6 Kanakot, standing on the roof of Pipal Chautari at Dadeldhura Bus Park, spent time waiting for a vehicle from 7 am to afternoon. He took a flight ticket from Dhangadhi to Kathmandu at 7 am on Wednesday morning and walked from the village in Jhismisemai. "He was going to meet his daughter in Kathmandu, from here he is asking for 7000 fares for Dhangadhi by private vehicle, other vehicles are closed," he said.

Gajendra Bohra of Alital rural municipality-8 of Dadeldhura was also in the bus park all day on Tuesday. Bohra, a daily wage labourer, wanted to go to Doti's budar. He was surprised when private vehicles including taxis charged Rs 1600 for a distance of Rs 200. "How can you pay 1600 for someone who wants to go to work?," he says, "This is the pain of the poor? They don't have money, they can't walk on the road." Whose demand is it, we common people are suffering.' He said that the closure of public transport has given the owners of private vehicles an opportunity to charge more fares.

Dadeldhura headquarter's bus park, which is always crowded, sees only buses that have been stuck for two days and passengers rushing to their destination. Passengers going to the village, going to Kathmandu via Dhangadhi, Mahendranagar are stuck in the bus park. Acting President of Ugratara Dadeldhura Public Transport Pvt. Ltd. Deepakraj Bhatt says, "The vehicle will not run until our demand is heard." Chief District Officer Chomendra Neupane has warned that action will be taken against private vehicles that cause inconvenience to passengers and charge arbitrary fares in the name of transport businessmen's movement.
