New Zealand's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Winston Peters, has pledged to spend 1.8 million dollars on education and health in the Khumbu region for the next 5 years.
Addressing a program held at Khumjung Secondary School on the occasion of May 29, i.e. 72nd Everest Day, Deputy Prime Minister Peters discussed New Zealand's relationship with the Himalayan region of Nepal and pledged to continue investment and support in health and education through the Himalayan Trust.
He said that the New Zealand government will continue to support Nepal and the Himalayan region. Edmund Hillary and Nepali Tenzing Norgay Sherpa remembered that they achieved a great achievement in the world by successfully climbing Mount Everest.
Deputy Prime Minister Peters, who arrived in Khumjung to celebrate Everest Day in Khumbu region to commemorate the 72nd anniversary of Everest climbing, was welcomed by Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Village Chairman Mingma Sherpa and locals. In the meantime, the municipality president Sherpa said that the continuous support of the New Zealand government in the education sector has been a great help in the production of skilled manpower and the overall quality of education in the Khumbu region, and requested to support climate adaptation programs in the future.
Palika President Sherpa said that due to the effects of climate change, major natural disasters have occurred in the Khumbu region and demanded to conduct adaptation programs.
Local leaders were vocal in their praise of the New Zealand government's support. Municipal President Sherpa informed that programs like sports, entertainment and climbing honors are being conducted in the Khumbu area on the occasion of Everest Day.
