After two days of efforts of the leaders to reach a consensus failed, the people's organization of CPN-UML has reached a state where the future leadership of the National Youth Union of Nepal will be decided by voting. The current president Kshitij Thebe and general secretary Suman Puri are in the race to become the president from the 10th Congress held in Pokhara.
Thebe has the support of party president KP Sharma Oli, while Puri has been supported by former president Bidya Devi Bhandari's party which is developing in UML. Oli's desire was to repeat Thebe for one term and assign the rest of the aspirants to the central committee of the party and the politics of geography.
Chairman Oli had openly said in the inaugural session held last Friday that he should not fight like in other parties, and give responsibility to those who are not in the youth union. After realizing his wish, Oli thought that he would not fight against Thebe. A leader of the youth union said, "The president said that a person who meets himself and has a good relationship would accept what I said." Why didn't he (Puriji) agree with Khoi?'
The head of UML's public organization system Bhanubhakta Dhakal, youth union in-charge and former president Rajeev Pahari, former presidents Mahesh Basnet, Nirudevi Pal, Kiran Paudel were working continuously for two days to conduct the election of Yuva Sangh. All the other aspirants understood Oli's desire and gave up their claims, but Puri did not give up his stance to fight for the presidency. The leaders had also proposed half terms to Thebe and Puri.
As the 40-year-old age limit meant that he could not serve a full term, Puri was suggested by the leaders to be active in the politics of geography. He kept telling the leaders that he should get the president as he has been vice president twice and general secretary once. After Puri did not withdraw even till Sunday morning, it was confirmed that the election would be held.
Both sides have already prepared the panel to participate in the election. Elections will be held for 163 posts including the president, two open vice-presidents, general secretary, deputy secretary general, two open secretaries, Madhesh and women's secretaries, commission officials and members.
Vinay Shah and Maharaj Gurung are candidates for Vice President, Mahesh Choulagai for General Secretary, Upendra Shahi for Deputy General Secretary from Thebe panel. From the Puri panel, Prakash Gautam, Parbat Bhandari, Kuvere Adhikari, and Khemraj Sharma are the candidates for the position of vice-president.
Thebe was saying that he will not repeat himself as president until he comes to Pokhara. He was thinking of becoming active in party and parliamentary politics from Taplejung. After the convention started, President Oli once instructed Thebe to repeat. After this, Thebe could not deny Oli's desire. When there was no unanimous vote, Thebe went to the polls.
Thebe said that he became a candidate again after being put forward by the party chairman. Realizing that the general youth needs a leader who can move forward with political awareness, the party leadership has pushed us forward to advance the youth movement. This is the reality," he said.
President Puri party president said that he entered the field to compete cleanly as he said in the opening session. "It is speculation when the incumbent president comes to participate in the election," he said, "The party president has said that it should be unanimous as much as possible in the open session, otherwise there should be a fair competition." Voting is scheduled to be held in Pokhara Hall from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm on Monday. 45 electronic machines will be used for voting.
