The presence of teachers is regular in Adarsh Secondary School located in Thuliberi Municipality-7. As before, the teacher reaches the school before 10 o'clock, but no students come. There are 750 students in the school records. Where do the students go?
Every year from May to June is the time to collect Yarchagumba. At this time everyone heads to the high Himalayan foothills in search of Yarchagumba, the local precious herb.
After locking the house, even children go there. "Since the beginning of May, the attendance of students has started to decrease, now it has come to a standstill," said Balakrishna Dangi, the principal of Adarsh Mavi.
In Tripurasundari Municipality-10 Liku, Janaprabha High School, teaching and learning is often halted. Students have walked to Patan. Our school with more than 700 students is open every day. There are only 30/35 students who come a lot," said Principal Tej Bahadur Giri. Education Development and Coordinating Unit Office Dolpa said that Yarcha season has affected 116 schools in the district.
Most of the schools are closed due to Yarcha season and some are having a small number of classes. There are about 14,500 students in schools in Dolpa. Some teachers have also reached Patan to look for Yarcha. Those who have houses outside the district are heading home to cover the chance of school closure.
According to Dilprasad Rokaye, Acting Chief Administrative Officer of Thuliberi Municipality, despite the municipality's decision not to close the school, classes have not been conducted due to non-attendance of students. Yarchagumba is connected with the income of the whole family. A poor student takes care of household expenses along with studying,' he said, 'at this time, students have more compulsions than desires.' There are 27 schools in Thulieveri Municipality.
According to Harsh Prasad Chaulagai, Head of Education Development and Co-ordination Unit, the problem of lack of teaching at the time of drawing up the papers is an old one. When the school is closed for various reasons, the students' academic performance deteriorates. This will affect their educational future," he said. "We should try to stop it." He said that stakeholders including political parties should be interested in addressing the problem of non-tuition during the collection of yarcha.
We are asking at the local level to run the school, but the people's representatives say that this is the season to earn money. It can be possible if the local government wants it,' said the head of the unit Chaulagai. The upper dolpa is more affected during
plotting. After closing the school itself, even the teachers went to Patan near the village to pick up the yarcha. Rooplal Budha of Karelikanda, Tripurasundari Municipality-1 said that because one month's earnings have to cover the expenses of the year, children also go to Patan in search of yarcha.
'Parents are now more important than education. But it is not as easy as you think to earn income by picking yarcha. Some children die due to the lake.'
According to Budha, nowadays even a 10-year-old child earns from 10 to 30 thousand rupees by plucking yarcha. A yarcha is sold for Rs 500 to Rs 1000 and per kg it is traded for Rs 15 lakh to Rs 30 lakh.
Yarchagumba is found in the high Himalayas above 3000 meters. Yarchagumba is known as a tonic herb with both plant and animal properties. Trader Devendraraj Neupane said that most of the Yarchagumba produced in Dolpa is exported to China.
While most of the schools are closed due to collection of tickets, regular classes are being held in some schools of Tripurasundari. Around 100 students attend Tripura Mavi located in Tripurasundari-1, where teaching is taking place.
'It is running because the teachers are also regular,' said the principal Tul Bahadur Bista, 'It is our responsibility to conduct the teaching after the students come.' Mentioning that last month's teachers' protest had affected the students' studies, he said that the school is running because the closure of the school during the Yarcha season also causes problems in the academic calendar.
Classes are also being conducted in Himjyoti Basic School of Tripurasundari-1. Principal Man Bahadur Sarki said that students are coming to school regularly. Principal Dev Budha informed that even Janpriya Basic School in Ward 9 has not stopped teaching.
