The Parliamentary Committee has instructed the Abuse of Authority Investigation Commission to investigate the case of Patanjali Yogpeeth and Ayurveda Company illegally selling the land to housing on a limited discount. On Thursday, the Public Accounts Committee of the House of Representatives also sent a letter with instructions that the authority has been conducting a detailed investigation into the land corruption case in the name of Patanjali for a year.
Chairman of the Audit Committee, Rishikesh Pokharel, said that the committee has sent a letter to the authority to conduct further investigation and bring the people involved to action because of the facts and evidence of the land being bought and sold against the law related to delimitation.
The written facts of the direct role of the then Prime Minister of Nepal in making decisions from the Council of Ministers have been found, from instructing Patanjali to raise comments for buying and selling demarcated land illegally. On June 6, 2081, Kantipur brought out an investigative news about Indian yoga guru Ramdev's Patanjali land corruption case.
After that, the Authority started an investigation and the Accounts Committee also wrote a letter to the Ministry of Land Management, Cooperatives and Poverty Alleviation on June 9, instructing them to submit the details about Patanjali's land case within 7 days. After that, although there was no further discussion on the matter in the Audit Committee, the Authority did proceed with a detailed investigation.
The then Prime Minister of Nepal, the then Secretary of the Ministry of Land Reforms Chhabiraj Pant, the then Director General of the Land Reforms Department Jit Bahadur Thapa, the head of Patanjali Nepal Shaligram Singh and others have taken statements from the accused. The then Chief Secretary Madhav Ghimire, who was involved in this case, has been missing since 9 October 2073 after his jeep fell into the Trishuli river, while the then Minister of Land Reforms Dumbar Shrestha passed away on 21 October 2081.
The authority sent a letter to Patanjali's chief Indian yoga guru Ramdev and his assistant Acharya Balakrishna to appear in the statement last February, but they have refused to give a statement. Authority officials say that the investigation has reached its final stage.
After the investigation started by the authority, the sale of the demarcated land in Kavre in the name of Patanjali that has been sold has been stopped. The suspension came after the authority sent a letter to the Dhulikhel Malpot to freeze 274 ropani 6 annas in Banepa and more than 88 ropani in Dhulikhel.
Patanjali Yogapeeth and Ayurveda Company was registered as a non-profit organization on 20 December 2064. After 2 years, on 18th January 2066, the then Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal passed a decision from the Council of Ministers and gave approval to Patanjali to purchase 815 ropani land in Kavre with limited concession. After that Patanjali Nepal Chief Singh bought 593 ropani 5 annas 3 paisa land.
Restricted land cannot be sold, but on 17 February 2066, Patanjali Nepal Chief Singh submitted a petition to the then Minister of Land Reforms, Shrestha, asking for permission to sell the land. On 3 March, Minister Shrestha took the proposal to the Council of Ministers to allow the sale of demarcated land by writing "according to the Prime Minister's verbal instructions" in the note. Then on 6 March, the then Prime Minister of Nepal made a decision to approve the sale of the land from the Council of Ministers.
However, Keshar Bahadur Baniyan, Director General of Land Reforms Department, refused to implement the decision of the Council of Ministers saying that the sale of demarcated land cannot be allowed, so he was removed and taken to Thapa. On 26 March, Director General Baniyan was asked for an explanation for challenging the decision of the Council of Ministers. The next day, on 27 March, Thapa was made Director General.
After getting approval, Patanjali sold more than 353 ropanis of land to Kastamandap Housing Company and bought 104 ropanis of land in Dhulikhel. The matter is under investigation after Kantipur brought out the fact that the rest of the land was sold by a planned illegal decision from Malpot to the Council of Ministers last year. Patanjali sold the land to Kastamandap Business Homes Pvt. This company and its director are also under investigation by the authority.
Patanjali embezzled 1 billion 51 crore rupees from 2015 to 2024 under the title of 'remittance' to operate service and non-profit industries in Nepal. The money brought in this way was used in various businesses including land and revenue embezzlement in the purchase and sale of restricted land is under investigation. Officials involved in the investigation say that while selling 353 ropani 15 annas land under Banepa's delimitation exemption, the amount was embezzled by showing the price at 42.22 million 50 thousand.
It appears that Patanjali has submitted the details of the purchase of 104 ropani 1 anna 2 paisa 1 daam land in Dhulikhel by selling the limited exemption land for 1 crore 7 lakh 50 thousand. According to the officials involved in the investigation, the purchase and sale of the land is estimated at more than 40 crores.
Audit Committee chairman Pokharel says, 'Looking at the received documents and the decision-making process, it is clear that illegal buying and selling has taken place, that's why the committee has unanimously decided to send a letter to the authority for investigation on this matter.' Section 12 of the Land Act 2021 mentions the provision to comply with conditions and restrictions including the equivalent amount of the land to be leased, the price of the land, and other restrictions if the land is to be transferred to another place after land registration.
is registered as a Patanjali Non-Profit Trust in Nepal. It has Ramdev, Balkrishna Acharya, Shaligram Singh, Rajendra Singh and Umesh Sarraf as directors. It seems that all its business in Nepal is done by Shaligram Singh on behalf of Patanjali Nepal.
