In Nepal, pre-monsoon activities have become relatively more active. According to meteorologists, generally the pre-monsoon system lasts for three months (until the onset of monsoon) from March, April and May. However, this year, there was a complete dry spell in April, but after May, there are clouds, rain, wind, thunder and lightning all over the country, said meteorologist David Dhakal of the Weather Forecasting Division of the Department of Water and Meteorology.
At present, there is an influence of western wind and local wind, water vapor air from the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea across the country. Meteorologist Dhakal said that even though the local common people think that the monsoon has entered due to the changing weather system, the pre-monsoon system is still active.
"The nature of pre-monsoon is like this, as the height of the dark clouds increases, there will be lightning, lightning, thunder, gale force winds, light, moderate and heavy rains," he said, "when there is hail in the first village, it is only splashing in other villages, the temperature is lower, it is completely dry and now it is cloudy and raining."
Sometimes it is going to be hot and sometimes it is going to be cold. "The heat wave is caused by the drought before the monsoon. This year, not only in Nepal, but also in neighboring India," says climate expert Ngmindra Dahal. "Pre-monsoon is a combination of north-west cold air and south-west warm air. When it rains, some places feel warm and some feel cold." It should be understood that it is raining. In monsoon, even if it rains, it is warm and the warmth is uniform.
A week ago, after it rained for about 3 hours in the afternoon causing flooding in the Roshi River, the locals even speculated that the monsoon had set in. The BP highway was blocked for about 16 hours due to flooding in the Roshi River and a woman was swept away by the steep river in Panauti. Ujjwal Upadhyay, Environment and Meteorologist said that the incident happened due to changes in the rate during the pre-monsoon rains. "Earlier, the water that used to take two days is now falling in two to three hours, so disasters such as floods are happening in Roshi," he said. As it is done, 80 percent of the total annual rainfall across the country falls during the four months of monsoon and 20 percent falls during the remaining eight months. Climatologist Dahal also says that the change in the duration and amount of rainfall has caused the disaster in pre-monsoon rains. "If we look at the pre-monsoon rate on a daily and monthly basis, there is not much difference from the average, if we look at the amount of rainfall on an hourly basis, there is already a lot of difference," he said, "The time of rainfall has decreased, the amount has increased, that's why events like Roshi have occurred." Due to the effect of climate change, the weather system of recent years is not the same as before. "There is a new kind of new". However, climatologist Dahal says that when the sky is the main source of water, the amount and duration of rainfall will be affected. Rather than raining, it makes sense how much water can be absorbed under the ground," said Dahal.
Since then, the Weather Forecast Division of the Department of Water and Meteorology has informed that there is no definite forecast about the onset of monsoon. "Now the pre-monsoon is going on, the monsoon will not start until it ends, it is not possible to say when it will enter," meteorologist Dhakal said. However, according to the Meteorological Department, the monsoon generally enters from eastern Nepal on June 13 and exits through western Nepal on October 2. Last year it entered three days earlier than the average.
Monsoon is active for an average of 112 days, the shortest 73 days was recorded in 1979 and the longest 134 days was recorded in 2022 . So far, the earliest monsoon was on May 31, 1996 and the latest on June 27, 1982. The earliest monsoon was on September 2, 1995 and the latest on October 19, 2014.
