There has been widespread discussion within the Congress about who will become the chairman after Sher Bahadur Deuba. General Minister Gagan Thapa and others have already started internal preparations after Deuba failed to become a candidate for the chairmanship in the 15th Congress.

On the other hand, some leaders of the Deuba side have also started discussions to create an atmosphere in their favor. In the Constitution of the Congress, it is stipulated that the chairman of the working committee of the party at all levels cannot be a candidate for the same position for more than two consecutive terms.

Meanwhile, former Congress officials, who are considered close to Deuba, held a discussion in Sanepa on Sunday. Leaders including former vice presidents of Congress Gopalman Shrestha, Prakashman Singh, Bimalendra Nidhi are present in the discussion. Similarly, former chief ministers Shashank Koirala and Krishna Prasad Sitaula and spokesperson Prakasharan Mahat are also present in the discussion. A leader present at the meeting said that the future convention and current political issues were discussed.

The Congress Constitution has fixed the tenure of the Central Working Committee for 4 years. Sher Bahadur Deuba was elected as the chairman of the 14th Congress in November 2018. According to the law, the convention should be held by November 2018. But in the statute, provision has been made to extend it by one year. In this way, it seems that the convention should be held by November 083.

According to the provisions of the constitution regarding political parties, an additional 6 months may be available. Clause 4 (b) of Article 169 of the Constitution has made a mandatory provision to hold a convention within five and a half years. In this way, if the 15th Congress cannot be held by May 2084, the question of constitutional crisis will arise on the Congress party itself.

BP's son Shashank Koirala, who is also a former general minister, is in the forefront of proposing that the convention should be held only after the parliamentary elections of 084. Shashank has been constantly maintaining this opinion in public forums and media. Brother Shekhar Koirala and his party leaders have taken the expression of Shashank who supported President Deuba in the 14th Congress as meaningful.

Mainly leaders Shekhar Koirala and Gagan Thapa are seen in the race for party leadership. Vice Chairman Purna Bahadur Khadka, Bimalendra Nidhi, Prakashman Singh and Shashank Koirala, who are aspiring for leadership, are seeking the support of Chairman Sher Bahadur Deuba. Recently, the relationship between Deuba and Chief Minister Thapa has also become close.
