Nepali Congress Member of Parliament Pratima Gautam has demanded to facilitate organ transplant arrangements for kidney patients. She said that the law provides that organs can be harvested from brain-dead people, but the government has not been able to implement it effectively.

Speaking at the meeting of the House of Representatives on Sunday, MP Gautam asked for the effective implementation of the legal and policy provisions related to organ transplantation to speed up and sustain the effectiveness of the brain death program.

'Patients suffering from kidney disease are forced to die without receiving the necessary kidney for organ transplantation. About 8,000 patients with end-stage kidney disease across the country  Waiting for an organ donor.  90 percent of patients who have reached the end stage of kidney disease and are waiting for transplantation are dying without getting an organ donor," said MP Gautam. "Without an organ donor, many kidney sufferers have to depend on dialysis, which makes their physical, mental and financial lives difficult day by day."

Member of Parliament Gautam said that the government has introduced the 'Regulations on Transplantation of Human Body Organs, 2073' targeting kidney patients, but the government has not paid attention to its implementation.

'Every year, the government is spending about one and a half billion rupees on dialysis alone. Transplantation is a viable option to improve the quality of life of kidney patients and reduce government expenditure on dialysis. Whereas in the regulations, it is mentioned that a coordination unit will be appointed to arrange the distribution of the received organs according to priority order. But the government has not designated such a unit so far,' she said.
