The Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal has clarified that the acquisition of land required for Gautam Budh International Airport at Bhairahawa has been done by the decision of the Council of Ministers.
When there was a question that more than necessary land was acquired in the name of the airport, the Minister clarified that the decision of the Council of Ministers was the act of land purchase . The Authority issued a statement on Wednesday and informed about the purchase of land required for the Gautam Budh International Airport.
'Before the operation of the international airport, Bhairahawa Airport was named after B.No. Domestic flights have been operating since 2015. In accordance with the plan of the Government of Nepal to regularly upgrade the domestic airport according to the schedule, for the construction of the aviation structure required for the airport, land acquisition has been done repeatedly on various dates as per the decision of the Government of Nepal Council of Ministers.
The authority has also informed that there is about 500 bighas of land in the name of Gautam Budh Airport. "For the purpose of operating an international airport as a strong alternative to Tribhuvan International Airport, according to the decision of the Council of Ministers dated 29th January 2072 and 7th Baisakh 2073, about 453 bighas of land have been acquired so far, and the other 47 bighas are public lands (parti, ailani, khola, kolo, etc.) and there are only about 500 bighas," the authority said.
The decision to acquire the land of Gautam Buddha International Airport was made by the Council of Ministers led by the then Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli. Oli became the Prime Minister for the first time from October 25, 2072 to July 19, 2073. At the same time, a decision was made to purchase land for the airport. Oli was the prime minister even when the construction of the airport was underway. The government was under his leadership for the second time from February 3, 2074 to Baisakh 30, 2078. The foundation stone of the airport was laid by Sushil Koirala, who became the Prime Minister from the Congress and inaugurated by Sher Bahadur Deuba. Koirala laid the foundation stone of Gautam Budh International Airport on January 1, 2071, while Deuba Deuba inaugurated it on May 2, 2079.
According to the airport's master plan, the total available land has been purchased for the runway, taxi-way, ship parking area, terminal building, air traffic control tower, various equipment areas, flight catering, disaster response and airport rescue and fire prevention building and aircraft parking.
Similarly, it is said that the land has been used for the airport surveillance area - radar, the international terminal building, oil corporation depot, cargo terminal building, helipad to heli terminal, climate and weather forecasting office and vehicle parking to be built in the future according to the master plan of the airport. There is a statement from the authority that about 40 bighas have been set aside for the construction of staff housing and other administrative buildings.
