Foreign Minister Dr. Arju Rana Deuba has said that free press and well-informed citizens are the guardians of democracy. Addressing the Lomanthang International Media Summit organized by the Nepal Press Union in Lalitpur today, she said, 'A free press can guard the democratic governance system. Therefore, democracy cannot be imagined without press freedom.'
Stating that citizens' freedom of speech and expression and freedom of press are more essential and important in the current era, she argued that a democratic, advanced and inclusive society can be built only through this path. He said that the current government is fully committed to press freedom. 'The Constitution has provided freedom of the press not only under the fundamental rights but also in the preamble itself. This clearly shows the commitment of Nepal,' she said.
He said that journalism has an important role to play when the basic values of respect for different opinions are decreasing more than before and journalism is the one that protects the truth and provides a platform for different voices. She requested the media persons to stop the flood of such false information and convey the truth and dignified information as misinformation and disinformation are now spreading negativity in Nepal and elsewhere.
