February 20, 2003 is the first day of Nepali labor movement. It was the workers of the jute mills who started the agitation. The trumpet call of that movement was made from this square. Which was led by Girijaprasad Koirala
To the east of Biratnagar Jute Mills, the country's oldest industry, an ordinary-looking square stands in a serene posture. However, from the point of view of history, this square is not only ordinary, it is a place of witness of revolution. From where the first voice of the Nepalese labor movement arose. Where the first seeds of revolution were planted.
'The seed planted in this Chautaro turned into a huge tree of democracy over time,' said Professor Krishna Pokharel, a resident of Biratnagar, 'that seed was the voice of justice of the workers, the demand for equality and resistance against tyranny.' But it was no ordinary market. Day by day, sloganeering, meetings and sit-in processions changed the appearance of that haat. After the labor movement, the name of the small market changed to Hattali Haat. There was movement every day. Sometimes picketing, sometimes procession . The workers went on strike and shouted slogans. And he stood up without being afraid of the police baton.
'This square was the center of the labor movement,' Kavita Magar, a local elder of Biratnagar Metropolitan City-15, is emotional remembering those days, 'Girijababu, Manmohan Adhikari were the leaders here . All day long they would sit here and plan the movement.'
Jute Mills was the first industrial organization of the country established in 1993. At that time, 2,400 workers and 400 employees were employed. It was not only a model of industrial revolution, but also a school of political movement. The country's political revolution also progressed from this industry. The revolution that started from this industry in the name of labor movement ended the Rana rule .
Girija Prasad Koirala, communist leader Manmohan Adhikari, Yuvraj Adhikari, Tarini Prasad Koirala and Gehendrahari Sharma were all workers in the same industry. However, they sat next to the table and chair and weaved dreams of revolution. From the communist leader of Darjeeling, Ratanlal Brahmin to the Indian socialist leaders, there was solidarity in the movement.
February 20, 2003 is the first day of Nepalese labor movement. It was the workers of the jute mills who started the agitation. The conch shell of that movement was from that square. Which was led by Girija Prasad Koirala . The laborers started a sit-in demanding proper wages and benefits. Dinesh Shrestha, the leader of Biratnagar, said, "The strike was announced after the industrial administration ignored the demand."
According to him, Nona Koirala, Divya Koirala, Nalini Upadhyay, Indira Acharya and Kamini Giri were also at the forefront of the movement. The movement lasted for a long time.
was the latter part of Rana's rule . 400 troops were sent from Kathmandu by order of the commander. The procession was fired upon without any warning . As many as half a dozen workers got 'Veergati'. "That incident shook the whole country," said Jagat Aryal, leader of Biratnagar, "The movement slowly took the form of satyagraha". The revolution was successful. The Rana regime ended and democracy came.'
