A dialogue has started between the leaders of the ruling party Congress, UML and the officials of the Nepal Teachers' Federation.
According to one of the leaders who participated in the discussion, the dialogue is focused on the demands of the teachers and the resolution of the protest that has been going on for 27 days.
'If the talks are positive, there is a possibility that some decisions may be made by the Council of Ministers today,' said the leader. In the ongoing discussion at the residence of Congress Vice President Purna Bahadur Khadka, 3 people including the President Laxmi Kishor Subedi are participating on behalf of the Teachers' Federation. On behalf of the ruling party, Finance Minister Bishnu Paudel, Home Minister Ramesh Akhtar, Education Minister Raghuji Pant, UML General Secretary Shankar Pokharel, Congress General Minister Gagan Thapa are participating.
Finance Minister Paudel, Home Minister Akbar, Education Minister Pant and General Minister Thapa were already in informal dialogue with the teachers. Former education minister Vidya Bhattarai has indicated that the nature of the movement can be changed if the partial demands of the teachers are addressed by the cabinet.
However, the Federation has sent a 9-point proposal to Education Minister Pant saying that a decision should be made by the Council of Ministers. Officials of the Federation say that if the partial demand from the Cabinet is met, the teachers will withdraw the educational strike and return to the classroom, but continue the symbolic movement until the School Education Act is promulgated. The Federation has made its bottom line the demand that the School Education Act should be issued according to the previous agreement.
