Three days extension on Congress MP Rai, inquiry into co-operative fraud

Congress MP Maya Rai, who was arrested for misappropriation of Swarnalakshmi Savings and Loan Cooperative in Kathmandu, has been extended by the court for three days, the investigation has started.

Rai, who was arrested on Saturday night from her residence Budhanilkanth Municipality-10 Shiv Mandir Kapan, was brought to the Kathmandu District Court on Sunday for an extension. 

SP and spokesperson of District Police Complex Kathmandu, Apilraj Bohra, said that an investigation has been started against him for crimes related to cooperative fraud and organized crime with a three-day deadline from the court.

On Sunday, the police informed Speaker Devraj Ghimire about the arrest of MP Rai.

Rai was the co-secretary of the cooperative in 2074. A case of fraud and organized crime was filed against 39 people including Gurkha Media Chairman Gitendrababu (GB) Rai, then Managing Director Ravi Lamichhane and former DIG of Nepal Police Chabilal Banjade Joshi in the charge of embezzlement of Swarnalakshmi Sahakari's savings. Swarnalakshmi's 690 savers filed a complaint saying that they were defrauded of 1 billion 1949 million 21 thousand 270 rupees. During the investigation, a total of 5 thousand 669 savers of Swarnalakshmi were prosecuted with the conclusion that 2 billion 65 crore 95 lakh 59 thousand 58 rupees were systematically defrauded. When the

case was prosecuted, 34 people including the main accused GB Rai were absconding. It is mentioned in the indictment that from Swarnalakshmi to shareholders, various profit-making companies and unauthorized persons, money was illegally taken and embezzled on various dates. At that time, Rai was not made a defendant. After the

, the public prosecutor's office instructed to investigate him, and the police obtained an arrest warrant from the court. Rai was elected central member from tribal quota in the 14th Congress. She is a proportional member of parliament who is in the party chairman Sher Bahadur Deuba's group. In the Swarnalakshmi Cooperative fraud case, the Kathmandu District Court had ordered Lamichhane to be released on bail of Rs 60 lakh and another accused Joshi on bail of Rs 50 lakh.
